Here, you have the freedom to work in a way that suits you, the support to thrive and the opportunity to shape your career .

What you’ll do

At Nottingham College, we are seeking a highly capable and versatile CAD, Engineering Design and Engineering Drawing Lecturer who can deliver across FE and HE engineering provision, from Level 1 through to Level 5, with the ability to support learners progressing towards bachelor’s degree-level study.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineering practitioner, CAD designer or lecturer who is confident delivering both computer-aided design and practical engineering drawing, alongside workshop-based engineering activities.

You will play a key role in developing learners' ability to interpret, create and communicate engineering designs using industry-standard drawing conventions, CAD software and practical engineering processes.

You will support learners at every stage of their engineering journey, from foundation learners developing basic drawing and workshop skills to higher-level students undertaking complex engineering design projects and technical documentation.

About the role

We are looking for an engineer, CAD designer or engineering lecturer with strong knowledge and practical experience in engineering design, CAD and technical drawing, with the ability to teach both the theory and practical application of engineering design principles.

The successful candidate will be confident delivering subjects linked to:

  • Engineering drawing and drawing conventions
  • 2D and 3D CAD
  • Technical drawing and interpretation
  • Design for manufacture and assembly
  • Engineering tolerances and fits
  • Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Manufacturing processes
  • Product development and design projects
  • Practical workshop skills
  • Engineering inspection and quality
  • Design calculations and engineering principles

You will deliver across FE and HE provision, supporting programmes including:

  • Level 1 and Level 2 Engineering
  • Level 3 BTEC and T Level Engineering
  • Higher-level learners progressing towards bachelor’s degree-level study

The successful candidate will combine strong technical and industry knowledge with the adaptability, learner focus and high expectations required within an FE and HE environment.

What you will teach

CAD and Engineering Design

You will be expected to deliver a range of CAD and engineering design topics, including:

  • 2D and 3D computer-aided design
  • Technical drawing standards and conventions
  • Orthographic projection
  • Isometric and sectional drawings
  • Assembly drawings
  • Detail/component drawings
  • Exploded views
  • Dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Fits and clearances
  • Design for manufacture and assembly
  • Creation and interpretation of technical documentation

Experience with industry-standard CAD packages would be highly desirable, including SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, Fusion 360 or similar.

You should be confident teaching learners how to take an engineering concept from an initial sketch through to a fully developed 2D/3D CAD model and associated engineering drawings.

Engineering Drawing and Technical Communication

A key part of the role will be developing learners' ability to communicate engineering ideas accurately through technical drawings and documentation.

This may include:

  • British and international drawing conventions
  • Orthographic projection
  • First-angle and third-angle projection
  • Sectional views
  • Auxiliary views
  • Dimensions and tolerances
  • Surface finish symbols
  • Welding and fabrication symbols
  • Drawing annotations
  • Drawing scales
  • Assembly and component drawings
  • Revision control
  • Bills of materials
  • Technical specifications
  • Interpretation of engineering drawings

You will ensure learners understand not only how to produce an engineering drawing, but also how drawings are used within real engineering and manufacturing environments.

Practical engineering and workshop experience is an important part of this role
