The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) supports the nursing and clinical team to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centred care in general practice.

The role focuses on routine clinical tasks, health checks, and prevention, helping patients to understand and manage their health.

The HCA works as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside Practice Nurses, Advanced Practitioners, and GPs.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• Carry out a range of clinical tasks , including

  • Blood pressure monitoring
  • Height, weight, and BMI measurements
  • Venepuncture (if trained)
  • Urinalysis
  • Prepare patients for consultations and clinics
  • Support basic wound care and dressings
  • Carry out
  • NHS Health Checks
  • (if trained)
  • Support screening and recall programmes
  • Communicate clearly with patients
  • Support patients to understand simple health information
  • Promote dignity, respect, and a positive patient experience

• Provide simple health advice , such as

  • Healthy lifestyle choices
  • Smoking cessation support (within scope)

• Work closely with

  • Lead Nurse
  • Practice Nurses
  • GPs
  • Other members of the health care team
  • Support the smooth running of clinics
  • Escalate concerns to a clinician when needed
  • Follow infection prevention and control procedures
  • Support stock control and equipment checks
  • Work within agreed protocols and scope of practice

The HCA role includes opportunities to

Person specification

  • Qaulifications and Training and Knowledge
  • Good standard of general education (for example GCSEs or equivalent, including English)
  • Willingness to complete relevant training for the role
  • Basic understanding of: Patient care and wellbeing Confidentiality and data protection Infection prevention and control
  • Care Certificate (or willingness to complete)
  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent)
  • Training in phlebotomy, NHS Health Checks, or ECGs
  • Awareness of general practice and long-term conditions

Experience and Clinical Skills

  • Experience working with people in a care, health, or support role
  • Experience working as part of a team
  • Experience providing patient or customer-focused care
  • Ability to carry out basic clinical tasks (or willingness to train), including: Blood pressure Height, weight, and BMI Urinalysis
  • Ability to communicate clearly
  • Maintain accurate records and use basic IT systems
  • Experience working in general practice or primary care
  • Experience carrying out clinical observations (e. g. blood pressure, BMI)
  • Experience supporting health promotion or screening programmes
