Salary: Starting Salary is £46,142 (Level one) rising to £49,282 (Level four) per annum pro rata for part-time (pay award pending)

About the Role:

As a Legal Intervention Officer, you will be expected to act as the council's specialist for the implementation of legal interventions and statutory provisions for addressing school attendance, ensuring best practice and quality interventions are implemented across the directorate. This will also include having delegated authority to act on behalf of the council in the prosecution of families, undertaking the role of the Investigating Officer, Deciding Officer, Disclosure Officer and Prosecutor. You will be expected to provide expert advice to managers and schools on attendance legal processes and when to prosecute.

About You:

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced professional with a strong background in school attendance and legal intervention. The successful candidate will bring a combination of technical expertise, sound judgement, and the ability to influence practice across services. An ideal candidate will have:

  • A strong working knowledge of school attendance legislation and statutory guidance, including the Education Act and enforcement processes
  • Proven experience of managing complex casework, including preparing evidence and progressing cases toward legal action
  • The ability to lead and undertake prosecutions on behalf of the Local Authority, including preparing case files, issuing penalty notices, and presenting cases in court
  • Excellent understanding of evidential requirements and legal thresholds for enforcement action

An ideal candidate would also demonstrate:

  • Strong organisational skills, with experience of working to statutory timescales and deadlines
  • Confidence in providing advice, challenge and support to schools, managers and partner agencies
  • The ability to develop and implement policies, procedures and systems to support effective legal intervention
