Advanced Social Work Practitioners - MASH

Working pattern: Hybrid working. Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week

Contract: Permanent

This is an exciting opportunity to join Nottingham City Council's Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) as an Advanced Social Work Practitioner.

Working in MASH is a fast-paced and rewarding role at the front door of Children's Services. You will play a critical role in safeguarding children and young people by receiving, screening and assessing contacts where there are concerns about a child's welfare, ensuring the right support and intervention is provided at the right time.

As an Advanced Social Work Practitioner, you will support effective decision-making within a multi-agency environment, working closely with colleagues from Children's Social Care, Police, Health, Education and other partner agencies. You will bring professional expertise to complex safeguarding concerns and provide leadership, guidance and support to colleagues, helping to ensure consistent threshold application and high-quality practice.

No two days are the same. You will be responsible for analysing information from multiple sources, identifying risk and protective factors, and making timely recommendations that promote the safety and wellbeing of children and families.

Key Responsibilities

You will:

  • Hold and actively manage a small caseload of complex safeguarding enquiries and screening work as required.
  • Provide expert advice, guidance and support regarding safeguarding thresholds and decision-making.
  • Lead on the screening and assessment of complex contacts and referrals.
  • Support colleagues with risk analysis, information gathering and safety planning.
  • Promote proportionate and timely interventions for children and families.
  • Work effectively with partner agencies to ensure information sharing supports robust decision-making.
  • Coach, mentor and develop social workers, family support workers and other practitioners.
  • Contribute to the continuous development of high-quality, relationship-based safeguarding practice.
  • Support quality assurance activity and drive improvements in service delivery.
  • Provide professional challenge, consultation and practice leadership on complex safeguarding matters.

About You

You are an experienced social worker with a minimum of three years' post-qualification experience, who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is confident making sound decisions in complex safeguarding situations. You have excellent analytical and assessment skills, a strong understanding of child protection and safeguarding processes, and the ability to support and develop others.

You will bring:

  • A recognised Social Work qualification and Social Work England registration.
  • At least three years' post-qualification experience working with children, young people and families.
  • Significant safeguarding and risk management experience.
  • Strong assessment, analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Effective leadership, practitioner development and multi-agency working.
  • Sound knowledge of children's legislation, safeguarding responsibilities and threshold guidance.
  • A commitment to high-quality, child-centred practice and continuous professional development.

Experience of working within a Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub, Front Door Service, Duty and Assessment Team, or a similar safeguarding service would be advantageous, although this is not essential.

Most importantly, you will understand the importance of timely information sharing, effective multi-agency safeguarding arrangements and the impact that high-quality decision-making can have on children and families.

Why Join MASH?

MASH offers a unique opportunity to make a difference at the earliest point of intervention. You will work alongside a range of professionals, gaining insight from different agencies and building expertise in risk assessment, information sharing and safeguarding decision-making.

You will join an experienced and supportive team that values professional curiosity, reflective practice and continuous learning. Regular supervision, development opportunities and the chance to influence safeguarding outcomes for children and families make this an excellent opportunity for social workers looking to progress their career.

This is an opportunity to play a pivotal role at the front door of Children's Services, ensuring children, young people and families receive the right support at the right time while helping to protect Nottingham's most vulnerable children.

Our benefits include:

  • Generous annual leave entitlement (between 26 and 33 days per year depending on your length of service)
  • Access to the Local Government Pension Scheme with an 18.5% employer contribution
  • Flexible hybrid working
  • A strong focus on wellbeing
  • Opportunities for professional development and career progression

In return, we are looking for compassionate, dedicated people who share our commitment to improving outcomes for children, young people, adults, and families across Nottingham. If you are passionate about making a positive difference through education and social care and want to help people thrive, we would love to hear from you.
