Are you a dedicated and experienced social worker looking to make a significant impact in the lives of children and families? Nottingham City Council and several other local authorities are seeking an Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO) to join their dynamic Qualified Social Work team. As an IRO, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that the voices of children and young people are heard and that their needs are met through effective care planning and review processes.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent reviews of care plans for children and young people in care, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Facilitate multi‑agency meetings to promote collaborative working relationships and effective communication.
  • Advocate for the best interests of children and young people, ensuring their views and wishes are incorporated into decision‑making.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of care plans and outcomes for children, providing recommendations for improvement.
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records of reviews and meetings in accordance with local authority policies.
  • Chair statutory meetings for Children in Care and Children with Disabilities according to legislative requirements, policy, and procedures.
  • Chair child‑protection conferences and children‑in‑care reviews, including county‑wide reviews where applicable.
  • Ensure children’s wishes and feelings are given due weight in care planning.
  • Monitor local authority performance to ensure good outcomes for children in care.
  • Support service development and participate in complaint investigations.
  • Work within the Independent Reviewing Officer Handbook 2010 or any subsequent legislation relating to the role.
  • Produce reports for Looked‑After Children Reviews and Foster Carer Reviews.
  • Provide advisory services to social workers and other professionals.
  • Quality‑assure court reports.
  • Chair and follow up strategy meetings and other relevant meetings.

Qualifications

  • A recognized social work qualification (degree in social work, DipSW, or equivalent).
  • Registration with Social Work England.
  • Significant experience in child protection and safeguarding, with a strong understanding of relevant legislation and statutory frameworks.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with children, families, and professionals.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to make sound judgments based on evidence.
  • At least 3 years’ experience as a social worker within children’s services.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to own vehicle.
