The successful applicant will join a motivated, friendly team of professionals committed to delivering highway maintenance and improvement projects that make a real difference to local communities. We pride ourselves on combining best value for money with innovation and sustainability, including the use of recycled materials and low‑carbon construction techniques.

As a Technician, you’ll play a key role in supporting the design and delivery of highway schemes, working closely with experienced colleagues to develop your skills and knowledge. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a career in civil engineering, with structured training and mentoring available. We actively support professional development, including academic qualifications and progression towards EngTech or IEng status with the Institution of Civil Engineers. You’ll enjoy a competitive salary and a generous benefits package, including pension, flexible working, and annual leave. Our hybrid working approach allows you to balance time between our offices, home, and site visits. We are committed to helping you succeed and grow in a supportive environment where your contribution is valued.

About You

OR clear, demonstrable evidence of equivalent skills and experience as set out in the job specification, plus a commitment to gain the essential qualifications.
  • Experience in an engineering environment (e.g., highways, civil, construction, utilities, or asset management) is highly valuable — for example, assisting with design support, planning, site coordination, maintenance, or technical/administrative processes.
  • Project/commercial experience delivering to agreed time, quality and cost outcomes.
  • Experience liaising with customers, colleagues, contractors and stakeholders, preparing materials for meetings/exhibitions, and turning problem investigation into clear actions or recommendations.
  • Strong attention to detail in capturing, storing and retrieving information using digital systems and templates, ensuring data quality and auditability.
  • Ability to interpret and produce clear technical and non‑technical reports, notes and drawings, and to read maps, plans and engineering drawings.
  • Good written and verbal communication, solid organisational skills and the ability to prioritise.
  • Confident IT user (e.g., Microsoft 365) and keen to learn service‑specific systems and software.

If you don’t meet every point but can show transferable skills, motivation to learn, and commitment to professional development, we’d still like to hear from you. You must also have an understanding of, and commitment to, equality, diversity and inclusion. In addition, we also expect you to share our commitment to our values and will ask you to evidence when you have demonstrated them as part of the selection process. Reasonable adjustments will be considered for applicants with a disability.

Interested in Flexible Working?

We are keen to support employees to balance their working life with other commitments. Therefore, wherever possible, we will consider working arrangements that suit an individual's personal circumstances whilst still meeting the needs of the Council.
