Role Overview

The role of Head of Classics is a rare and exciting opportunity for an ambitious and talented Teacher of Classics to step into a leadership role at one of London's leading independent girls’ day schools. As Head of Classics, you will provide clear, confident leadership of a thriving departmental program, including curriculum development, maintaining high standards of teaching and learning, and ensuring effective use of resources. You will inspire students in Latin and Greek and foster a deep appreciation of the ancient world’s literature, history, and culture, equipping them for further study beyond school. The department offers enrichment opportunities such as extension classes and overseas trips to destinations such as Greece, Naples and Sicily, together with visits to museums, theatres and classical sites in the UK.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Classics department, shaping curriculum and setting high teaching standards.
  • Develop and maintain an engaging curriculum for GCSE and A Level Latin and Greek.
  • Manage departmental resources effectively and promote a collaborative culture among staff.
  • Coordinate co‑curricular activities, including enrichment camps, overseas trips and heritage visits.
  • Represent the department in school leadership meetings and external relationships.
  • Encourage and develop staff and student engagement in the study of classical literature, history and culture.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Strong track record of successful teaching at GCSE and A Level.
  • Excellent subject knowledge of Latin and Greek.
  • Experience contributing to or leading co‑curricular activities.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to enthuse and inspire students and colleagues.
  • Experience in curriculum development and departmental leadership is an advantage.
