Blue Zoo offers an opportunity for a Senior Blender Lighting and Compositing Artist in both on-site and remote/hybrid modes in London, with a short-term contract starting at the end of January 2026. Experience in lighting and compositing in Blender is valued, with a focus on stylised animation and teamwork.

About The Role

The Blender Lighting and Compositing Artists (L&C) are exceptional visual storytellers who define the environment and atmosphere of stories, highlighting the charming details of characters, props, and environments. They are experts in lighting, colour, and creative problem-solving.

The day-to-day involves creating lighting in Blender, perfecting colours in compositing, while always balancing maximum quality with meeting deadlines.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Create lighting setups in Blender to fit specific creative briefs, modifying light types, intensities, and colours.
  • Adjust light rigs, render settings, and compositing templates to achieve the desired look for each shot.
  • Oversee renders ensuring they stay within the established time budget.
  • Collaborate with other departments to solve production challenges, communicating effectively to advance projects.
  • Resolve technical issues and correct errors quickly, addressing feedback received.
  • Manage time to meet deadlines, proactively informing production of potential delays.
  • Accept direction and implement changes with a positive, solution-focused attitude.

About You

Essential Requirements:

  • Solid knowledge of Blender for lighting, rendering, and compositing.
  • Previous experience as an L&C artist in animation productions.
  • Understanding of lighting principles and their application in stylised animation.
  • Technical understanding of 3D lighting, light types, render settings, physics-based rendering, ray tracing, and global illumination.
  • Technical knowledge of biased rendering to optimise samples and avoid noise and artefacts.
  • Understanding of colour theory, aesthetics, and composition.
  • Problem-solving skills, finding solutions and consulting when necessary.
  • Attention to detail, reviewing final shots for errors or inconsistencies.
  • Proven experience working in a team and collaboration.
  • Able to receive and act on feedback and direction.
  • Excellent time management and prioritisation skills.
  • Ability and motivation to share knowledge with the team.
  • Excellent creative problem-solving skills.

Bonus Points:

  • Experience with Flow/Shotgrid.
  • Knowledge of shading.
  • Understanding of the 3D production pipeline.
