Biomedical Scientist in City of Westminster

An opportunity exists for a Full Time, HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist wishing to work within the Haematology and Blood Transfusion departments at Northwick Park and Central Middlesex Hospitals. The post is for BMS with Haematology and Blood Transfusion experience to cover all shifts, full training and competency will be provided prior to commencing shifts. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic professional in the North West London area with good travel links into several mainline London stations.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in all of the shifts to support the needs of the 24/7 requirements of the service as allocated by the Head of Haematology and Blood Transfusion Laboratories. The ideal candidate will contribute to providing a professional and technical laboratory service working effectively as a team member as part of the overall department and to work independently performing routine analyses with support as required from senior Biomedical Scientists.

• Rotate between Haematology and Blood Transfusion across Northwick Park and Central Middlesex Hospitals, covering the 24/7 service including night shifts.
• Run Sysmex XN track, Sysmex CN analysers, morphology and maintain TATs for A&E and other urgent areas in Haematology.
• Perform automated grouping, antibody screening, crossmatching, NHSBT referrals and provide component support for major haemorrhages in Blood Transfusion.
• Participate in all areas of laboratory bench work, adhering to standard operating procedures and participating in regular review and update.
• Multidisciplinary working as required.
• Communicate patient results and answer enquiries from health care professionals, providing information regarding appropriate investigations required and explaining results within departmental guidelines and professional code of conduct.
• Interpret clinical information and use scientific knowledge to process specimens for appropriate tests, seeking advice from senior staff and clinicians when necessary.
• Undertake specimen preparation and analysis for a range of sample types.
• Operate and maintain analytical equipment in the department.
• Evaluate and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures.
• Interpret complex scientific data and enter test results on the pathology computer system.
• Check reports for further action by clinical staff.
• Authorise reports as delegated within departmental policy.
• Replace stocks of consumables and reagents when required and inform the Section Leader if backup stocks are low.
• Assist with preparation of documentation for UKAS (ISO) accreditation.
• Solve complex problems within the work area and advise clinicians and senior staff of any clinical and managerial issues.

• Theoretical and practical knowledge in the discipline of pathology relevant to the role.
• Previous experience in a relevant laboratory with proficiency in techniques appropriate to the discipline.
• Registration with HCPC as Biomedical Scientist.
• IBMS Accredited BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent.
• Participation in a relevant CPD Scheme (e.g., IBMS).
