We’re looking for a skilled Senior Technician to join our dynamic team within the Faculty of Science and Environment, providing essential technical support for both research and teaching in the School of Engineering, Physics and Mathematics (EPM). Your role will involve operating, maintaining and developing facilities in the Electrical Engineering laboratories, collaborating closely with academic and technical colleagues to deliver an exceptional experience for students at our Newcastle campus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist technical support in Electrical Engineering for teaching, research, enterprise, and CPD activities, including preparation, operation, and maintenance of equipment and materials.
  • Supervise routine procedures and ensure adherence to Health and Safety at Work standards within specialist facilities; create, implement and carry out maintenance schedules of specialist equipment.
  • Plan, develop, and maintain specialist facilities, including layout design, costing, resourcing, and managing the asset register and loan systems.
  • Advise, assist, and deliver demonstrations or training sessions to staff and students on specialist equipment, methods, and safety procedures; produce learning materials and guides.
  • Lead, supervise, and manage technical staff and/or facilities, participate in recruitment, and contribute to continuous development of processes and facilities.
  • Work collaboratively across departments, maintain professional body accreditation, and be available for occasional off‑site, evening, or weekend work.

Qualifications

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent professional experience in one or more of the practice‑based subjects offered by the Faculty.
  • Experience in electrical engineering laboratories and equipment support.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations and experience in maintaining compliance.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to train and guide staff and students.
  • Leadership experience or potential to lead technical teams.
