Location: Agile – you will be based full time at Forth Banks, Newcastle during your first 6-month probationary period. Following successful completion, agile working arrangements will be considered in line with Force policy.

An opportunity has arisen to join our Professional Standards Department as a Caseworker. The management and resolution of complaints is a core part of maintaining public confidence. Complaints can be varied in nature, ranging from expressions of dissatisfaction or frustration with our services through to serious allegations of misconduct. In this role, you will provide specialist casework support to the complaints and conduct investigation process, ensuring matters are progressed efficiently, professionally and in line with legislative requirements. This is a fast‑paced and detail‑focused role where you will manage a varied workload, working with sensitive information and contributing to fair and transparent outcomes. You will work both independently and collaboratively, building effective relationships with colleagues and external partners, and playing a key role in ensuring cases are managed to a high standard.
What you’ll do
- Manage and progress complaint and misconduct cases, ensuring procedural requirements and statutory guidance are adhered to.
- Prepare and quality assure complaint, review and appeal files, ensuring a high standard of accuracy, detail and presentation.
- Research, gather and collate evidence from a range of systems and sources (including CCTV, custody records and other databases) to support investigations and referrals.
- Complete mandatory and voluntary referrals to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), ensuring all relevant information is captured and submitted in a timely manner.
- Support the planning, organisation and administration of misconduct meetings and hearings, including liaising with stakeholders and attending where required.
- Contribute to the preparation of documentation and evidence to support review and appeal processes, assisting Reviewing Officers where required.
- Respond to enquiries from internal colleagues, members of the public and external organisations in a professional and timely manner.
- Adapt to changes in legislation and processes, supporting continuous improvement within the department.
What you’ll bring
We are seeking someone who is organised, detail‑oriented and able to manage a varied workload in a fast‑paced environment. You will:
- Be an excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing;
- Be able to prioritise tasks effectively and manage competing deadlines;
- Demonstrate strong attention to detail and accuracy when handling sensitive information;
- Be confident working independently as well as collaboratively within a team;
- Be flexible in your approach, including attending hearings or meetings outside of standard office hours when required.
You will also have:
- A full UK driving licence (essential to enable travel between locations; a fleet vehicle will be available where required);
- Experience working with confidential or sensitive information;
- The ability to research, validate and corroborate information using systems and databases;
- Good organisational and problem‑solving skills with the ability to prioritise workload;
- Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
It would also be beneficial if you have:
- A working knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g. IOPC complaints guidance and Police Misconduct Regulations);
- Experience of systems such as Centurion.
