The North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU) is one of ten Regional Organised Crime Units (ROCU) in England and Wales that lead the regional response to serious and organised crime. NEROCU delivers intelligence, operations, cyber, economic, and digital capabilities across the region.

The role

You’ll be working alongside our experienced Dark Web team, supporting live crypto investigations and expanding your expertise through Chainalysis training and advanced analytical tools. From interpreting Crypto SARs to mapping emerging threats, you’ll help shape future SOC strategies and reduce harm across the region.

What you’ll do

  • Drive data‑led investigations: Plan and conduct data collection and integration to support complex analysis. Use advanced data techniques—including programming—to manage and interpret large datasets, identifying opportunities to disrupt serious and organised crime.
  • Collaborate and represent NEROCU: Liaise with internal teams, partner agencies, and external organisations to share intelligence and coordinate analytical products. Represent NEROCU at briefings, conferences, and national working groups.
  • Deliver impactful analysis: Apply recognised analytical techniques to assess intelligence, test hypotheses, and develop inferences that inform tactical and strategic decisions.
  • Enhance regional threat understanding: Produce analytical products that identify regional, cross‑border, and national SOC threats.
  • Support live operations and legal processes: Provide real‑time research during live operations, prepare evidential statements, and attend court as a professional witness.

What you’ll bring

  • Proven experience in conducting detailed analysis across varied data sources.
  • Familiarity with analytical tools and techniques, including data extraction and manipulation.
  • Relevant qualification in intelligence analysis (e.g. Level 3 City & Guilds or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of how intelligence and evidence support law enforcement, including CPIA, IPA, and the National Intelligence Model.
  • Awareness of SOC threats and enablers, particularly in cryptocurrency and the dark web.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to present findings clearly and influence across all levels.
  • Collaborative approach, experience with cross‑agency partners.
  • Capability to mentor colleagues and support skill development.
  • Confidence in Microsoft Office; willingness to learn specialist systems.
  • Willingness to travel across the UK – Full UK Driving Licence required.

Terms of appointment

This is a fixed‑term role subject to a six‑month probationary period. Successful candidates will be required to complete Management Vetting (MV)/Security Clearance (SC) and meet UK residency criteria.
