Strategic Independent Advisory Group (SIAG) is a group of independent volunteers who offer constructive appraisal to the Police on its strategies, policies and services. Acting as a critical friend, SIAG is a vital strand of community consultation and engagement. Join our long standing Strategic Independent Advisory Group (SIAG) here at Northumbria Police and help make a difference to the communities we serve.

Do you have an interest in supporting Northumbria Police build stronger relationships with all communities? Do you have experience of working with diverse people or groups? Can you listen to views and opinions and challenge in a constructive manner? This is an exciting opportunity for you to be part of this valued group.

We are looking for people from a broad range of communities with different skills, experience, knowledge and perspectives. We welcome applications from suitably qualified people from all sections of our diverse communities, regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.

As a SIAG member your insights and contributions can help Northumbria Police continue to build stronger relationships with diverse communities whilst also improving the services we deliver.

The role includes:

  • Considering proposals and offering timely suggestions about how to do things better based on your own personal experiences as well as those of our communities.
  • Considering relevant management information and offering an interpretation of underlying community issues.
  • Identifying opportunities to network and build partnerships with other organisations and communities.

You need to be able to:

  • Critically appraise organisational policies, practices and procedures.
  • Provide constructive feedback on sensitive issues and offer recommendations on possible improvements.
  • Maintain the highest level of discretion and confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information.

Successful candidates will be vetted. To attend a minimum of 6 meetings a year as well as those called in response to critical incidents. Candidates must reside temporarily or permanently, or have connections with the Northumbria Police area.

Members of the SIAG are a group of unpaid volunteers and will include independent individuals from diverse communities with a broad practical experience working with and for communities. SIAG meets six times a year and members are expected to attend a minimum of four of these meetings. All members will be vetted to protect the integrity of Northumbria Police and the SIAG. Membership will be reviewed annually by our SIAG Chair, SIAG members and Northumbria Police, with consideration given as to whether further recruitment of members is required. New members will be subject to an induction process. The SIAG membership will include a Chair and a Deputy Chair. An election will take place every 3 years for the Chair and Deputy Chair where all independent members are allowed to vote. The process for election will be agreed by members.

Please note Vetting is part of the process and you must have been a UK resident for 3 years. This opportunity will close 11th May 2026. Interview will take place week commencing 25th May.
