Main duties of the job

This is your chance to make a real difference to people living with complex, enduring mental health conditions who are experiencing acute, long-term mental health problems within our inpatient services in North Cumbria.

You will be a highly skilled and knowledgeable team player who is able to think holistically and creatively in order to deliver specialist assessment and management and physiotherapy service provision for service users who have a variety of complex physiotherapy needs, diverse presentations and a range of mental health, learning disabilities and/or neurological conditions, alongside our multi-disciplinary team.

Alongside the clinical leads and other colleagues, you will undertake the service development and implementation of evidence-based core pathways across inpatient services using research, innovation, and quality improvement.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Provide physiotherapy intervention to patients within our inpatient mental health services in North Cumbria based at Carleton Clinic, Carlisle. To undertake a comprehensive assessment of patients including many with diverse or complex presentations/multi pathologies; use clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques to provide an accurate diagnosis of their condition. Formulate and deliver an individual Physiotherapy treatment programme based on a sound knowledge of evidence-based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment skills.

Formulate accurate prognosis and recommend best course of intervention, developing comprehensive discharge plans.

Triage and prioritise Physiotherapy referrals in order to implement effective and timely caseload management.

Determine clinical diagnosis through skilled assessment, developing appropriate specialised Physiotherapy treatment plans and maintaining records as an autonomous practitioner.

Provide support, supervision and teaching/training to members of the team and contribute to in-service training rota.

Contribute to service development and change, through liaison with Clinical Lead Physiotherapists. Support evidence-based audit and research projects to further own and teams clinical practice. Make recommendations to the Clinical Leads of service improvements and assist with the implementation of specific changes to practice or contribute to service protocols.

To manage your own caseload with the support of senior Physiotherapists. Supervision takes the form of regular formal training and clinical reasoning sessions, peer review, and case conferences. Access to advice and support, clinically and for caseload management, from clinical lead physiotherapists.

To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.

Person specification

Education and Qualification

  • Recognised Physiotherapy degree qualification or equivalent
  • State registration with HCPC

Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience of working with service users, family and carers in delivery of treatment plans
  • Multi-disciplinary team work
  • Awareness of and adherence to CSP Standards.
  • Ability to establish a rapport with service users
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Skills and Competencies

  • Good communication skills. Ability to assess and implement appropriate treatment plans.
  • Ability to use IT systems.
  • Ability to adapt within a changing environment
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to work autonomously and within a team
  • Effective time and caseload management skills

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
