Help us give visitors an unforgettable experience of Northumberland National Park

Are you passionate about Northumberland, enjoy delivering excellent customer service and have experience of supervising a team? Do you love working with people, promoting local products and helping to deliver successful events?

We’re looking for a friendly, organised and enthusiastic Sill Supervisor to help lead our Visitor Welcome and Café teams and ensure visitors receive a warm welcome and an outstanding experience at The Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre.

The Sill is a gateway to exploring the incredible landscapes, heritage and wildlife of Northumberland National Park. In this varied, hands‑on role, you’ll help bring the centre to life, inspire visitors to discover more about the area and support the smooth running of our retail, café and events offer.

About the role

You’ll play a key role in the day‑to‑day operation of The Sill, supervising colleagues, supporting volunteers and helping maintain high standards across our visitor welcome, retail and café services.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and supporting the team: Supervising the Visitor Welcome and Café teams, delegating work and helping colleagues deliver excellent service.
  • Creating great visitor experiences: Welcoming visitors, sharing your knowledge of the National Park and providing information about local attractions, activities, accommodation and events.
  • Supporting retail and café operations: Maintaining attractive displays, promoting merchandise and local producers, processing sales and payments, and supporting the café team.
  • Delivering successful events: Coordinating events and trade fairs, preparing spaces, liaising with organisers and suppliers, and ensuring events run smoothly.
  • Keeping the centre running safely and efficiently: Helping maintain a clean, welcoming environment, monitoring supplies, reporting building issues and following health and safety procedures.
  • Supporting the wider National Park: Promoting membership, donations and Gift Aid, helping visitors discover more about the area and working collaboratively with colleagues and partners.

This is a varied role where no two days are quite the same. You’ll need to be flexible, take a hands‑on approach and be willing to work regular evenings and weekends, including bank holidays, to support the centre and its events.

About you

You’ll have significant experience in tourism or retail, excellent customer service skills and experience of handling cash and using a cash register or EPOS system. You’ll also have experience of organising and delivering events, working with suppliers and supporting or delegating tasks to a small team.

You’ll bring a good knowledge of Northumberland National Park and the surrounding area, together with a genuine enthusiasm for helping people make the most of their visit.

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Friendly, approachable and an excellent communicator.
  • Organised, dependable and able to use their initiative.
  • Calm and professional when dealing with customer queries or complaints.
  • Flexible and comfortable working varied hours to meet the needs of the centre.
  • Committed to high standards of customer care, teamwork, integrity and inclusion.

You’ll also need good literacy, numeracy and IT skills, alongside an understanding of health and safety in a public building.

Knowledge of National Park purposes, environmental and rural issues, or experience of working in a heritage or cultural attraction would be an advantage. Qualifications in tourism information or event management, and knowledge of another European language, would also be desirable.

This is an opportunity to be part of a team that helps people connect with one of England’s most special landscapes. You’ll work in a distinctive visitor destination,

support a wide range of events and activities, and help showcase the people, places and stories that make Northumberland National Park unique.

If you enjoy working with people, take pride in delivering excellent service and want to help visitors discover more about Northumberland, we’d love to hear from you.

Join us and help make every visit to The Sill a memorable one.

Closing date is 8am on 30th October 2026.
