Role of the Job
The Animal Welfare Team (AWT) is recruiting an experienced and highly motivated Animal Welfare Officer (AWO). The role is based at the Council’s Stakeford Depot, Choppington, NE62 5TR and is part of the Environmental Enforcement Team (EET) within Neighbourhood Services, delivering waste, recycling, parks and green spaces support.
As an AWO you will work independently under the Senior Animal Welfare Officer while liaising closely with local vets, animal shelters, charities and key internal services such as Safeguarding and the Council’s legal team.

Responsibilities
- Stray dog collection
- Enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act 2016 and related legislation
- Enforcement of dog fouling and animal‑related Public Space Protection Order restrictions
- Complaint investigation
- Promotion and education of responsible companion animal ownership, including the Green Dog Walker Scheme
- Participation in a fast‑paced, outcome‑focused environment that addresses both urban and rural needs
Qualifications & Experience
- Good standard of literacy, numeracy, and basic IT skills
- Experience in dog and companion animal handling
- Knowledge of enforcement procedures, including patrolling, interviewing and case management
- Excellent communication and customer‑handling skills
- Full driving licence
