Northumberland County Council is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) Engineer to play a leading role in delivering the Council's statutory responsibilities as the Lead Local Flood Authority, while also helping to develop and deliver an ambitious programme of flood alleviation and coastal erosion management projects. This is a strategic role with a strong focus on flood risk and coastal erosion policy development, statutory functions, planning consultations and delivery of capital FCERM projects.

We're looking for a professional with substantial experience in flood and coastal erosion risk management, policy development, stakeholder engagement and infrastructure project delivery. You'll bring excellent technical knowledge, strong leadership skills and the ability to influence strategic decision-making at local and regional levels.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading on delivery of the Council's statutory duties, including flood investigations, development of strategies, maintenance of the register of assets and the regulation of ordinary watercourses.
  • Leading and coordinating the provision of responses to planning applications, marine licence applications, Ordinary Watercourse Consents and national consultations relating to flood and coastal erosion risk.
  • Developing policies, strategies and programmes that support climate resilience and sustainable development across Northumberland.
  • Working closely with partners including the Environment Agency, Northumbrian Water, planning authorities and other risk management organisations.
  • Leading the development and delivery of flood alleviation and coastal protection projects, securing external funding and managing programme and project delivery.
