Northumberland County Council is seeking a Senior Trading Standards Officer to join its Trading Standards and Animal Health team. This is a key senior post with responsibility for operational delivery, supervision of staff, and contributing to the ongoing development of the service.
The role will suit an experienced Trading Standards professional who is either already managing staff, or is an operational officer looking to progress into a role that includes responsibility for the management and development of others.
You will contribute to the delivery of statutory and discretionary Trading Standards functions, protecting consumers, supporting legitimate businesses, and working effectively with internal and external partners. The Trading Standards and Animal Health Team in Northumberland consists of 14 officers, including 4 officers dedicated to Animal Health enforcement. The remaining officers deliver the full Trading Standards remit, in line with individual qualifications and experience. While service delivery includes food standards and feed hygiene, statutory qualification in these specialisms is not essential for this post.
The team is currently based at West Hartford Fire Station Headquarters in Cramlington although agile working from home or other Council buildings is well established. The team forms part of the Council's Public Protection Service, alongside Environmental Health, Licensing and Civil Contingencies. Public Protection is within the Council's Public Health directorate.
The day‑to‑day management of work is overseen by one other Senior Trading Standards Officer and a Senior Fair Trading Officer, all of whom report to the Trading Standards and Animal Health Manager.
Essential qualification for this role is a Trading Standards Practitioner Diploma (or its antecedents). A full driving licence, valid in the UK, is required.
Northumberland County Council's (NCC) vision is 'Land of Great Opportunities', for current and future generations. We believe there is no better place to live and work.
Benefits include:
- 26 days annual leave plus public/bank holidays, rising to 31 days after 5 years of service (pro‑rata for part‑time employees).
- Automatic enrolment into the Local Government Pension Scheme.
- Flexi scheme (if applicable) – up to 2 days flexible leave available per month (pro‑rata for part‑time employees).
