We are looking for an experienced and driven BI Manager to join the Data Ops team. This is a hands‑on leadership role, combining technical delivery with line management of a small team of BI professionals. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining business intelligence solutions that drive data‑driven decision‑making across the organisation, while also mentoring and developing their direct reports. You will work closely with stakeholders across Underwriting, Claims, Finance, Strategy, Compliance and other analytics teams to translate complex business requirements into robust, insightful, and scalable BI solutions using the Microsoft Azure stack.
What will you be doing?
- Technical Delivery
- Design, develop, and maintain Power BI dashboards and reports to support business performance monitoring and strategic decision‑making.
- Build and optimise data pipelines and transformations within Azure Databricks, ensuring data accuracy, reliability, and performance.
- Develop and maintain SSRS/PowerBI Paginated reports for operational and regulatory reporting requirements within the insurance business.
- Collaborate with data engineering teams to define and implement data models that support BI consumption layers.
- Champion best practices in data visualisation, report design, and self‑service analytics.
- Troubleshoot and resolve data quality, pipeline, or reporting issues in a timely manner.
- Line Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of 2–3 BI Analysts, supporting their professional growth and day‑to‑day performance.
- Conduct regular 1‑to‑1s, performance reviews, and objective‑setting in line with NorthStandard’s data and digital strategy.
- Allocate and prioritise workload across the team, ensuring timely delivery against business requirements.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive team culture with a focus on continuous improvement.
- Act as an escalation point for technical queries and provide guidance on complex analytical challenges.
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as the primary point of contact for BI‑related requests from business stakeholders across the organisation.
- Translate business requirements and challenges into clear technical specifications, prototypes and reporting deliverables.
- Support stakeholders use of reporting deliverables, through change management activities such as comms, training and creation of user guides.
- Communicate insights and findings to both technical and non‑technical audiences in a clear and concise manner.
- Support stakeholders with ad hoc analysis, management information, problem solving and strategic reporting.
This role is based in our Newcastle office, with occasional travel to our London office as required.
About you - Skills/Qualifications/Experience
- 5yrs+ Experience working with relational datalakes/databases, focusing on the Azure stack including Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL 2012 – 2019), SSIS, Azure Data Factory and Azure Databricks.
- Line management experience of a small team.
- Strong influencing, communication and engagement skills.
- SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) / PowerBI Paginated.
- SQL Analysis Services – (SSAS) – Developing and supporting Multidimensional, as well as Tabular models.
- Experience of working in an Agile delivery environment and solid understanding of DevOps/DataOps.
- Source Control using Git.
- Troubleshooting skills (T‑SQL, Stored Procedures, Functions (including Windowing), SSIS, SSAS).
- Performance tuning.
- Power BI.
