Opportunity: This is more than just a job; it’s a mission. Are you an experienced Hardware Engineering Manager, eager to work in a highly regulated defence environment? This position is responsible for the functional excellence of the Hardware capability across the NG Defence Operating Unit. You would lead the Mechanical, Electrical and Product Design teams to provide the capability required by the operating unit and is the primary point of contact for the function. The functional manager is responsible for the planning, directing and coordinating of the functional activities to meet agreed metrics (schedule, budget, quality, technical performance) and in compliance to required processes and practices (e.g. company frameworks, processes, standards, export controls, etc). They will provide input to support the engineering strategy and will be responsible for the delivery of Hardware initiatives linked to the strategy.

Responsibilities:
- Leadership and line management: Motivate and drive the Hardware function to meet key business and operational unit objectives. Develop an open and inclusive team culture that supports doing the right thing and achieving excellence. Ensure behaviours in teams meet standards expected of NG employees. Influences others and supports colleagues through changes expected within a large multi-functional organisation.
- Capability Management: Management of capability needs in the Hardware function Career management of the Hardware function.
- Resource management: Resource supply and demand, Capacity planning and recruitment, and outsource management.
- Functional delivery: Ensures appropriate planning, allocation of SQEP and appropriate resources and high-quality delivery to the various projects and programmes, and functional activities are performed in accordance with approved process.
- Planning: Approval of project plans specific to the hardware teams. Implementing functional plans and objectives.
- Excellence: Perform Design assessments as required. Will be expected to support the Hardware team through review of plans, documentation, designs and drawings as a Suitably qualified individual in either mechanical or electro-mechanical field of expertise. May be functional lead within projects/issues for most critical/complex needs.
- Process Management: Highlight process needs and work with the Technical Directorate to develop bespoke, efficient and fully integrated processes.
- Asset management: Identify tools and Management of tools.
- Communication: Develop relationships with other managers within and outside of engineering to support the delivery of projects and meet objectives of the function and organisation.
- Compliance: ensures compliance to standards, regulations, and company policies and processes applicable to the Hardware function.
Salary: £75,000 - £85,000

We are looking for:
- Degree-qualified in a relevant engineering/technical subject (e.g. Electrical/mechanical engineering or similar) or extensive experience in a relevant area.
- Relevant experience within defence, maritime, and/or aerospace sector.
- Working knowledge of Hardware Design Defence Standards and regulations.
- Experience leading and developing high performing teams.
- Evidenced substantial experience in a Hardware Engineering role (e.g. Mechanical or Electrical), including but not limited to:
- Experience in product lifecycle management, taking designs from conception through to a robust product solution.
- Experience in design for manufacture, Design for Six Sigma, or similar continuous improvement philosophies.
- Knowledge of Electrical and Mechanical Design.
- Knowledge of Production and Manufacturing techniques.
- Experience designing for: safety, security, maintainability, reliability, etc.
- Knowledge of various analysis techniques, including electrical loads, FEA, CFD, etc.
- Materials knowledge (including REACH and RoHS regulations).
Security clearance: You must be able to gain and maintain the relevant UK Government security clearance in line with the job role (SC).
