The Role
As a Credit Underwriter, you will be responsible for assessing lending applications from SME businesses, conducting detailed financial analysis, evaluating risk, and providing clear lending recommendations. Working closely with relationship managers and lending colleagues, you will play a key role in ensuring applications are assessed efficiently, responsibly, and in line with the organisation's lending appetite.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess and underwrite SME lending applications across a broad range of sectors.
- Analyse financial statements, management accounts, cashflow forecasts, and supporting documentation.
- Evaluate affordability, creditworthiness, and overall risk exposure.
- Prepare detailed credit assessments and lending recommendations.
- Identify key risks and mitigating factors within lending proposals.
- Support the structuring of facilities to meet both customer needs and risk requirements.
- Ensure all lending decisions comply with internal policies and regulatory standards.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders throughout the underwriting and approval process.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation across the lending lifecycle.
- Contribute towards continuous improvement of credit processes and risk frameworks.
About You
- Previous experience in a Credit Underwriter, Credit Analyst, Commercial Underwriter, Business Banking, Lending Officer, or similar role.
- Experience assessing SME, commercial, or business lending applications.
- Strong financial analysis and credit assessment skills.
- The ability to interpret company accounts, management information, and cashflow forecasts.
- Excellent written communication skills with the ability to produce clear credit recommendations.
- A commercial mindset combined with strong risk awareness.
- High attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
