The Position: The Control Systems T&V Engineer will perform a pivotal role in electrification projects within Williams Grand Prix Technologies. By employing methodologies and expertise from motorsport and Formula 1, WGPT presents a unique opportunity to work with ground-breaking technologies in several areas including Aerospace, Motorsport, Marine, Industrial and Off Highway. We are seeking a Control Systems Test & Validation Engineer – Battery Systems to lead verification and validation (V&V) activities for battery control software and electrical hardware. This role is critical to ensuring the performance, safety, and compliance of supervisory controllers, Battery Management Systems (BMS), and Cell Monitoring Units (CMUs). You will be responsible for developing and executing test strategies across MiL/SiL/HiL environments, supporting integration, calibration, and release of production-ready software.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain Verification & Validation plans for battery control software and hardware.
- Own and manage requirements related to certification, including REG.100, UN38.3, and relevant marine, aerospace, and industrial standards.
- Support certification and compliance testing for safety, performance, and regulatory standards.
- Set up and manage Model-in-the-Loop (MiL), Software-in-the-Loop (SiL), and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) test environments, including tooling, automation, and documentation.
- Design, build, and maintain test benches, harnesses, and procedures for automated and manual testing.
- Execute integration testing of supervisory controllers, BMS, and CMUs, including validation of inter-system communications (e.g., CAN, LIN, Ethernet).
- Perform software calibration and tuning, including generation of production-ready software tags and parameter sets.
- Collaborate with software, hardware, and systems teams to ensure robust test coverage and traceability.
- Analyse test results, identify issues, and drive resolution through root cause analysis and cross-functional collaboration.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical, Computer Science, Control engineering, or a related field.
- Proven experience in developing and operating MiL/SiL/HiL testing environments, including test automation, infrastructure setup, and maintenance.
- Skilled in creating and executing V&V test plans, with a strong understanding of the V-model and its application to embedded control systems.
- Capable of producing high-quality documentation to support software deployment, production release, and certification processes.
- Strong understanding of battery control systems, including supervisory logic, BMS, and CMUs, with the ability to interpret system behaviour and identify root causes of issues.
- Team player, able to work effectively at all levels of an organisation with the ability to influence others to move toward alignment.
- Able to work autonomously, driving decision and influencing change in a dynamic ‘start up’ environment.
- Demonstrated ability to multitask, prioritise competing demands and drive results in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Ability to adapt to changes quickly, capable to pivot and focus on competing initiatives, as well as manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Proven ability to generate calibration and tuning sets for control software, including preparation of production-ready parameter configurations.
- Experience developing HMIs, GUIs, and interactive tools to operate and monitor HiL rigs and test environments.
- Understanding of dynamic modelling and its integration into real-time test harnesses for simulation and validation.
- Familiarity with communication protocols such as CAN, LIN, Ethernet, and relevant diagnostic and logging tools.
- Experience with software calibration, version control, and release processes.
- Knowledge of functional safety standards (e.g., ISO 26262) and certification frameworks such as REG.100, UN38.3, and sector-specific standards (marine, aerospace, industrial).
- Appreciation of embedded systems architecture, including software-hardware interactions and timing constraints.
