People come to Northern for trains they can rely on and that starts long before they set foot on board. Behind the scenes our maintenance teams make sure every train is safe, clean and ready to run, keeping our network moving and our customers happy. As part of this team you’ll help us look after our fleet, keeping things running smoothly, spotting issues before they become problems and making sure our trains leave the depot in top condition. It’s hands-on work that makes a real difference every day.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll be part of a busy fast-paced environment where no two days are the same. Here’s what your role could include:

  • Maintaining and servicing our trains to make sure they’re safe and ready for service.
  • Fuelling and tanking trains so they can head out on time.
  • Carrying out external cleaning and preparation work to support maintenance tasks.
  • Assisting skilled Engineers in keeping our diesel fleet in great shape.
  • Following health and safety standards and procedures, keeping yourself and others safe.
  • Taking an active role in your own training and development as you learn the ropes.

You’ll work shifts including early mornings, late nights, weekends and Bank Holidays so flexibility is key. You’ll also need to live within 60 minutes drive of your TrainCare Centre.

About you

You don’t need an engineering qualification; we’ll give you all the training you need. What matters most is your curiosity, willingness to learn and pride in doing a great job.

  • Basic technical skills whether that’s mechanical, electrical, plumbing or general hands-on experience.
  • A commitment to safety and following procedures.
  • A calm can-do attitude when things get busy or plans change.
  • Teamwork – you’ll be working closely with others to keep everything running smoothly.
  • Great communication skills and the confidence to speak up when something doesn’t look right.

You’ll also need to pass a safety-critical medical assessment including checks on general health, vision, hearing, colour vision and drugs and alcohol.
