Every Northern journey relies on skilled drivers and the training that prepares them for the railway of tomorrow. As we introduce European Train Control System (ETCS) technology across our network, we're investing in cutting‐edge simulation training to help our drivers build confidence, capability and safety in a controlled learning environment.
As our ETCS Training & Simulator Manager, you'll be at the heart of this transformation — delivering innovative, scenario‐based training that supports our drivers and helps embed new technology safely across the railway. This is a hands‐on role combining driver expertise, training delivery and simulator development, helping shape how ETCS training is designed, delivered and continuously improved across Northern.
What you'll be doing
- Deliver high‐quality simulator‐based training while helping develop the systems, scenarios and processes that support it.
- Deliver engaging ETCS simulator training and coaching to drivers using scenario‐based learning.
- Support the design, delivery and evaluation of training programmes, including initial, conversion and refresher training.
- Develop and maintain risk‐based training scenarios that reflect operational realities and safety learning.
- Support the acceptance, configuration and ongoing development of simulator capability with manufacturers and suppliers.
- Monitor training outcomes and use data and feedback to continuously improve learning experiences.
- Ensure training aligns with Northern's Safety Management System and operational standards.
- Work closely with depots, driver managers, unions and project teams to support the successful rollout of ETCS.
Please note: This role involves regular travel across the Northern region and whilst the initial training period will be Mon‐Fri, delivery will then be on a shift basis between 06:30 and 22:00, with occasional weekends, bank holidays and nights when we are undertaking testing.
About you
You'll bring operational credibility and a passion for helping others develop their skills in a safety‐critical environment. You'll have:
- Qualified Train Driver status with strong operational experience.
- Proven experience delivering driver training or instruction.
- An instructional or assessor qualification (such as Level 3 Assessor or L&D qualification).
- Strong communication and coaching skills.
- The ability to work with new technology and contribute to training design and continuous improvement.
- Experience with simulation‐based training or ETCS systems would be beneficial, but we'll support the right candidate with training where needed.
