SALARY: 62700

ROLE TYPE: On site - Neville Hill

HOURS: 37 per week

Engineering at Northern is full of people who live and breathe rail. Experts in traction safety and strategy who help keep our fleets running smoothly day after day. As our new Engineering Manager (TCC) you'll sit at the heart of it all leading a talented technical team across our Train Control Centres (TCCs) to help make our fleet even safer, more reliable and ready for whatever the North throws at it. You will be working out of our Neville Hill Train Care Centre supporting fleet performance and technical investigations and shaping plans that keep our customers moving. This is a role with reach and impact: not just helping trains run on time but setting the standard for how we respond to incidents, plan investment and champion continuous improvement.

What you'll be doing:

  • Leading the regional TCC technical team to improve fleet reliability, safety and compliance
  • Shaping and supporting engineering strategy in collaboration with senior leaders and depot teams
  • Acting as the technical lead for safety incidents and fleet investigations
  • Building and guiding a high-performing team with a focus on talent succession and skills development
  • Contributing to on-call technical support across the fleet
  • Working with suppliers, manufacturers and industry partners to embed best practice and deliver results
  • Advising on business cases, reliability projects and key metrics helping Northern hit our performance targets
  • Taking a lead role in analysing technical data to identify safety trends and risks

About you:

You'll be someone who thrives on engineering challenge and team leadership with the insight and experience to spot issues before they become problems. Fleet strategy, technical investigations and safety are all part of your skillset but it's your ability to bring people with you that makes the biggest impact. HNC or HND-level engineering qualifications are essential. If you've got a NEBOSH certificate or you're working towards one, even better. You might also be a chartered engineer or on the journey to becoming one. Experience in rolling stock depot operations and audits will help you hit the ground running.

What's in it for you:

  • Free Travel: Unlimited free travel for you, your partner and your dependents on Northern services. Plus up to 75% discount on other networks in the UK and Europe.
  • Generous Pension Scheme: We top up your contributions by 1.5 times.
  • Enhanced Family Benefits: We offer 9 months of full pay for maternity leave and 2 weeks for paternity leave.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme: Save up to 42% on a bike and spread the cost.
  • Exclusive Discounts: From shopping to wellbeing, Northern Perks has you covered.
  • Employee Assistance Programme: 24/7 support for family, lifestyle and more.
  • Training and Career Development: We offer tailored training to our colleagues and opportunities to gain recognised qualifications. Plus enhanced career pathways no matter what part of the business you're in.

With 2500 trains running daily, we’re on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone:

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board. At Northern we don't just move people from A to B, we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We’re also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role we’ll always offer an interview. We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly.
