Role/Department:
The Specialist has a strong technical understanding of products, services, regulations, and IT systems in the financial services industry. In addition, the Specialist will participate in audit engagements, which includes planning, reviewing, and challenging a project scope to provide guidance to audit teams on IT related testing. The Specialist will draft and review audit reports to ensure actionable information is provided to senior management and ensure reports meet audit requirements and departmental standards, highlighting risks in areas of IT and Cyber security.
The role reports directly to the Audit Director and assists in recruiting, retention, and development of the audit team, with a key focus on building IT audit capability. The Specialist provides input to improve operational efficiency of Audit Services, while identifying opportunities to enhance the design and operating effectiveness of Northern Trust’s internal control environment, particularly in technology and information security.
The key responsibilities of the role include:
- Draft board reporting, both at the legal entity and corporate levels, including IT risk considerations
- Interact with global regulators to articulate Audit’s view on IT governance, cyber security, and technology risk
- Support audit engagements with IT subject matter expertise, including infrastructure, applications, cloud, and emerging technology
- Review IT general controls (access management, change management, backup/recovery) and application controls for critical systems
- Monitor regulatory updates and advise on audit plan adjustments
- Assess technology risk management frameworks and provide recommendations for improvement
- Participate in meetings with business units and technology leadership to discuss IT audit results and remediation plans
- Assess the design and operating effectiveness of controls for IT operations, services, and systems
- Develop audit teams’ technical understanding of IT risks, tools and methodologies
- Drive and support change in the Audit Services team in line with the vision and strategy
Skills/Qualifications:
The successful candidate will benefit from having:
- Strong knowledge on IT audit principles, IT risk management, and cyber security frameworks (e.g., NIST, ISO 27001)
- Experience with IT general controls, application controls, and automated testing techniques
- Familiarity with cloud computing, data analytics, and emerging technologies
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to explain technical risks to non-technical stakeholders
- Previous internal IT audit management experience
- Knowledge of auditing in financial services and relevant regulatory requirements
- Strong report writing and ability to present complex IT issues clearly
- Professional certification (e.g., CISA, CISM, CISSP) are highly desirable
- Analytical and problem solving skills to identify technology risks and propose actionable solutions
