We keep the railway moving 24/7, expected shifts would be days, nights, weekend working. Every train that leaves the facility carries thousands of journeys with it – and it all starts with the people who keep it running. At Shipley, you’d be part of a skilled team making sure each train is safe, reliable, and ready for the day ahead. This is hands-on engineering at its core. You’ll be working on the trains themselves – diagnosing faults, carrying out repairs, and making sure everything meets the standards that keep passengers moving. It’s practical, varied work where your skills make a real, visible difference every shift.

Be Part of Something New. Shipley TrainCare Centre is a brand-new facility, giving you the opportunity to help build the standards, culture and ways of working from the very start. In this role, you’ll support the day to day running of the facility while helping to create a professional, safe and high performing team environment. This means:

Whether your ambition is technical, leadership or specialist expertise, Shipley offers the chance to build a long, rewarding future in a modern, forward-thinking engineering environment.

What you’ll be doing. Focused on carrying out planned maintenance, fault diagnosis and repairs to ensure trains are safe, reliable and available for service:

  • Diagnosing faults and applying mechanical and electrical knowledge to fix them
  • Completing all work to the required standards, with accurate and accountable sign off
  • Working closely with your Team Leader to prioritise and progress tasks
  • Using tools, equipment and materials safely, correctly, and taking responsibility for their care and condition
  • Carrying out minor repairs to plant and equipment where needed
  • Taking pride in maintaining a clean, safe and well organised work area
  • Supporting colleagues and sharing knowledge across the team
  • Consistently demonstrating the behaviours and standards expected across the facility
  • Providing on-the-job guidance to apprentices, trainees and new starters

Depending on your skills and competencies, you may also:

  • Undertake welding, brazing, or burning tasks
  • Carry out air conditioning maintenance
  • Support surface preparation and patch painting

About you. You’re someone who takes pride in doing a job properly. You enjoy solving problems, working with your hands, and being part of a team that relies on each other. Here’s what you’ll bring:

  • A recognised apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3 competence in an engineering discipline

  • The ability to read and follow technical and safety instructions
  • Confidence working independently and managing your own workload
  • Good communication skills and a team-focused approach
