Location: Shipley TrainCare Centre

Reports to: Shift Production Manager

Salary: £56,919 per annum

Hours: 35 per week, including days, nights and weekend shifts to keep the railway moving 24/7.

Assessment Days: Assessment days will be held at Shipley on 9th and 16th July. Successful applicants must be available to attend one of these dates.

Overview: Behind every reliable journey is a team that ensures each train is ready to go – safe, clean and performing. As Deputy Team Leader you’ll help guide how the work gets done, support the Team Leader, keep jobs moving and share your knowledge with others.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out servicing, maintenance, repair and overhaul of trains and components.
  • Supervise and guide team members during maintenance, cleaning and servicing activities.
  • Allocate and distribute work to keep productivity high and targets on track.
  • Sign off completed work and highlight anything outstanding.
  • Support shift briefings and keep the team informed throughout the day.
  • Diagnose faults, carry out testing, and use fleet systems to spot trends or repeat issues.
  • Act as the designated person for Depot Protection, overhead line isolations and all yard movements, taking on the Person in Charge role when required.
  • Ensure tools, materials and equipment are available, correctly used, and properly maintained.
  • Maintain a safe, clean and well‑presented working environment.
  • Support audits, inspections and investigations as required.
  • Liaise with the Team Leader to flag issues, suggest improvements and keep everything running smoothly.

Supporting Team Leadership:

  • Provide guidance and on‑the‑job support to colleagues to build capability across the team.
  • Help identify development needs and share feedback with the Team Leader.
  • Lead by example, role‑model safe working, behaviour and high standards.
  • Step into designated responsibilities such as Fire Warden or other safety roles where trained.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Experience in traction and rolling stock maintenance.
  • Recognised apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3 in Engineering.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems – from schematics to fault finding.
  • Ability to work independently while supporting and guiding others.
  • Practical and solutions‑focused approach.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail and task control.
  • Confidence using systems and technical documentation.

Additional Qualifications: An IOSH qualification and Fire Warden training are useful. If you do not yet have them, you will be supported to gain them.
