Foundation apprenticeships are introductory courses that help young people get started in an industry. You do not need to have any specific qualifications or experience to apply. Anyone between 16 and 21 can start a foundation apprenticeship. If you're between 22 and 24, you can start if you have an EHC plan, are in care or have been in care, are in prison or have been in prison.

Northern Skills are recruiting on behalf of Subway for a friendly, passionate, team player to join their busy team as a Sandwich Artist. The successful learner will gain a level 2 Foundation Level Apprenticeship in Catering and Hospitality.

Wage: £12,480 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age. National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices.

Training course: Catering and Hospitality Foundation Apprenticeship (Level 2).

Hours: The store is open Monday to Sunday. Hours and days will be confirmed at interview, but typical shift patterns include 7:30 am – 3:00 pm and 11:00 am – 7:00 pm. A flexible approach to working hours is essential. 30 hours a week.

Duration: 8 months.

What you'll do at work: As a Catering & Hospitality Apprentice, you will work within a busy Subway store, gaining hands-on experience in food preparation, customer service, and day-to-day store operations. This Level 2 apprenticeship provides a strong foundation for a future career in hospitality, retail food service, or management. You will learn how to deliver excellent customer service, maintain food safety standards, and work effectively as part of a fast-paced team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Food preparation – preparing fresh ingredients, assembling sandwiches, and following Subway’s food safety standards
  • Customer service – greeting customers, taking orders, handling payments, and ensuring a positive experience
  • Store hygiene – maintaining cleanliness of the store, equipment, and food preparation areas
  • Stock management – assisting with stock rotation, deliveries, and storage
  • Teamwork – supporting colleagues to ensure smooth daily operations
  • Compliance – following all health & safety, food hygiene, and brand standards

Where you'll work: 31-33 Wellington Square, Stockton on Tees, TS18 1RG

Training: Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills. Training provider: Middlesbrough College. Training course: Catering and Hospitality Foundation Apprenticeship (Level 2). This training schedule has not been finalised. Check with this employer if you’ll need to travel to a college or training location for this apprenticeship.

You will work towards a Level 2 Catering & Hospitality Apprenticeship, delivered through a combination of workplace learning and structured training sessions over 8 months, all on-site training where you will gain a Recognised Qualification in food safety, teamwork, health & safety, and hospitality industry knowledge.

Requirements: You do not need to have any specific qualifications or experience to apply for a foundation apprenticeship.
