The energy industry is advancing with investment in smart technology innovation and Northern Powergrid, as the company responsible for powering everyday life for 8 million customers across 3.9 million homes and businesses in the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire, is at the forefront of delivering a power network that meets the region’s needs now and in the future.
The Cyber Standard Advisors will ensure governance, risk management, and compliance across NPg’s digital OT and telecoms environments, maintaining alignment with key regulatory frameworks and driving continual improvement of the Information Security Management System (ISMS).
Along with a competitive salary of between £45,000 - £55,000 we also offer great benefits such as: 25 days holiday; 10% Performance Bonus. SC-level National Security Vetting clearance is required for this role. Candidates will be required to have lawfully resided in the UK for a minimum of 5 years to support security clearance processes.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain, operate, and continually improve the ISMS, including documentation, policies, controls, and effectiveness monitoring.
- Support compliance and assurance activities across ISO/IEC 27001 & 27019, NCSC CAF, NIS Regulations, and the Smart Energy Code, including audits and inspections.
- Conduct security risk assessments and develop treatment plans in line with ISO/IEC 27005 and internal policies.
- Define and deliver security metrics (KPIs, KRIs), dashboards, and reporting to inform governance and decision‑making.
- Manage the lifecycle of corrective actions, including tracking, implementation of compensating controls, and assurance of remediation.
- Support incident response, post‑incident reviews, business continuity, disaster recovery, and lessons‑learned activities.
- Manage third‑party security assurance, including suppliers, contractors, MSSPs, penetration testing, and vulnerability management.
- Promote Security by Design across projects and procurement, providing assurance guidance and training.
- Support wider governance, risk and compliance activities as required.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- As Northern Powergrid operates as part of the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure, this role requires security clearance. Applicants must have lawfully resided in the UK for a minimum of five years to be eligible.
- Proven experience with ISO27001 certification and audit cycles.
- Knowledge of ISO27002, GDPR, and risk treatment methodologies.
- Experience in managing risk assessments and remediation.
- Familiarity with governance, assurance, and reporting frameworks.
- Strong understanding of IT and OT environments and associated risks.
- Attainment of RFQ Level 4 qualification (e.g., HNC) or equivalent professional experience.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- Experience with Network and Information Systems Regulation.
- Experience with the NCSC CAF.
- RFQ Level 5 qualification or above.
