The Accounting Manager oversees the daily operations of the accounting department and ensures the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of the company's financial records. This role manages general ledger activities, monthly/quarterly/year-end closing processes, the balance sheet reconciliation process and the preparation of management accounts and financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards. The Accounting Manager supervises accounting staff, coordinates audits, implements internal controls, and collaborates with cross-functional teams to support budgeting, forecasting, and strategic decision-making. The position requires strong leadership, analytical skills, and the ability to improve financial processes and systems to enhance organizational efficiency and compliance. This role will report to the Corporate Controller and will manage at least three teams of Management Accountants, Finance Officers and Finance Assistants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Management & Reporting
    • Lead the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual management accounts.
    • Ensure compliance with UK accounting standards and internal reporting.
    • Manage balance sheet reconciliations, accruals, prepayments, and journal entries.
    • Oversee year-end audit preparation and act as the primary contact for external auditors.
  • Team Leadership
    • Supervise, mentor, and develop a small finance team (e.g. Management Accountants, Finance Officers and Finance Assistants).
    • Manage workloads, set priorities, and ensure high-quality output.
    • Support ongoing training and professional development.
  • Internal Controls & Compliance
    • Maintain and strengthen internal financial controls.
    • Develop and document accounting policies and procedures.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting
    • Assist with annual budget preparation and periodic re-forecasts.
    • Work with FP&A by providing financial insights and variance analysis to support business decision-making.
    • Work closely with FP&A and departmental managers to track performance and control costs.
  • Operational Finance
    • Promote and develop process efficiencies across the department by fostering an environment of continuous improvement.
    • Support implementation and optimisation of finance systems and other digital tools.

Candidate Requirements

  • Demonstrable experience in a similar role, with oversight of multiple companies, and proven experience in managing teams.
  • Have the capability in motivating and mentoring accounting staff and developing strong relationships with key stakeholders and leaders.
  • The ability to identify financial challenges, propose solutions and support decision making.
  • Knowledge in accounting principles and practice is essential.
