NORTHERN LIGHTHOUSE BOARD are recruiting for Trainee Health, Safety & Environmental Advisor.

About us: The Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB) is the General Lighthouse Authority for Scotland and the Isle of Man, responsible for the superintendence and management of lighthouses, buoys and beacons within those waters to ensure the safety of the mariner. Our service makes a significant contribution to the prevention of accidents and incidents around the coastline, safeguarding not only lives and property, but also protecting our precious marine environment.

Salary and Benefits:

  • £36,867 per year rising to £49,191. Progression to top salary will be based on achievement of qualifications and experience but envisaged to take a minimum of four years.
  • Hybrid Working & flexi time when working in the office.
  • A Civil Service Pension with an average employer contribution of 28%.
  • Annual Leave allowance of 25 days, rising by 1 day per year of service up to 30 days.

The Role – Overview:

In this trainee role you will be guided/mentored by the HS&E Manager and HS&E Advisors to enable you to progress your HS&E knowledge and career further. This role is suitable for candidates who are at the early stages of their HS&E career with (or close to award of) suitable initial HS&E professional qualification. Based at the NLB’s Headquarters, Edinburgh, with a requirement for some travel throughout Scotland and the Isle of Man, you will help ensure the implementation of the NLB’s documented Health, Safety and Environmental Management Systems ashore and afloat. You will work with employees, managers, contractors and suppliers across NLB providing a proactive, efficient and collaborative HS&E service.

Other duties will involve the preparation and delivery of HS&E Management information reports, inspection/audit reports and use of computer database and reporting systems. You will be expected to lead by example and assist with the establishment of health and safety requirements across ship and shore locations and use your initiative to provide practical solutions. You will develop your skills to support staff and contractors to maintain compliance with health and safety standards. In addition, you will also gain presentation/training skills so that you will be able to deliver HS&E training courses/refreshers to small and large groups. You will be required to visit sites, sometimes by boat, ship or helicopter to undertake health, safety and environmental inspections. There will be a requirement to attend a safety critical medical assessment and training courses such as helicopter under water escape, personal survival techniques, work at height/casualty rescue etc., all of which will be provided by NLB.

Our ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Must have a demonstrable enthusiasm and passion for HS&E. You will be at the early stages of your HS&E career.
  • A strong collaborator with excellent communication skills, you will be expected to deliver presentations to staff and be able to influence decision makers at all levels.
  • Basic knowledge of HS&E legislation.
  • Good written skills and able to provide structured reports and papers.
  • Working towards (close to award), or in possession of, a formal HS&E qualification e.g. degree in HS&E related subject or vocational safety qualification such as NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent and thereafter be prepared to work towards further HS&E professional qualifications.
  • Working towards or willing to work towards a relevant environmental qualification.
