Appointment of Members

The Department of Finance is seeking to appoint up to three new members for the Northern Ireland Fiscal Council. The terms of appointment will be for five years.

The aim of the Council is to bring greater transparency and independent scrutiny to the current and future state of Northern Ireland’s public finances, to inform public debate, and policy decisions. It provides independent reporting on the Executive’s performance in delivering its budget.

Members are appointed by the Finance Minister for their independence and expertise, and are expected to act impartially, free from political influence. They should be willing and able to engage with Assembly Committees, contribute to public discussion, and speak at events on matters relating to public finances.

The appointments come at an exciting time for the Council which having been formed in 2021, has recently gone through the Assembly process to place it on a statutory footing.

Members of the Council will require a commitment of up to 30 days per annum to the appointment. This position will be paid at a rate of £390 per day. The appointment is non-pensionable.
