Mental Health Support Worker – Make a Difference Every Day

Location: Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria
Salary: £13.45 per hour
Hours: Monday to Friday, 10:00am – 3:00pm
Contract: Part-Time, Perm

Do you want a role where you can make a real difference?

At Northern Healthcare, we believe that recovery is possible for everyone.

We're looking for a Mental Health Support Worker to join our friendly team in Barrow-in-Furness, supporting adults with mental health needs to live as independently as possible.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys building genuine relationships, getting out and about, and helping people make the most of their day.

The role is Monday to Friday, 10am–3pm, making it ideal for someone looking for consistent daytime hours.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Mental Health Support Worker, no two days will be exactly the same. You'll provide practical, emotional and person-centred support, helping the people we support achieve their goals and maintain their independence.

A key part of this role will be supporting people to get out into the community.

This could include:

  • Supporting people to attend appointments – helping individuals get to GP appointments, hospital appointments, health reviews and other important commitments.
  • Supporting activities within the service – helping plan and deliver activities that encourage social interaction, confidence, independence and wellbeing.
  • Getting out and about – supporting people to access the local community, go for walks, visit local places, attend activities or simply enjoy some time away from the service.
  • Building relationships – spending quality time with the people we support, getting to know their interests, preferences and goals.
  • Supporting independence – encouraging individuals to develop everyday skills and make their own choices wherever possible.
  • Providing emotional support – being someone who listens, understands and provides reassurance when needed.
  • Recording and communicating – maintaining accurate records and sharing important information with colleagues to ensure consistent, high-quality support.
  • Promoting safety and wellbeing – following care plans, risk assessments, safeguarding procedures and Northern Healthcare policies.

It's About More Than Support

Sometimes the smallest things can make the biggest difference.

It could be accompanying someone to an appointment they've been worried about, helping someone try a new activity, going out for a coffee, encouraging someone to take part in an activity they've previously avoided, or simply being there to listen.

You’ll help the people we support to build confidence, develop independence and enjoy meaningful experiences.

What We're Looking For

You don't necessarily need previous experience in mental health.

We're looking for people who are:

  • Kind, caring and compassionate
  • Patient and understanding
  • Reliable and responsible
  • Confident communicating with others
  • Comfortable supporting people in the community
  • Creative and enthusiastic about activities
  • Able to encourage and motivate others
  • Respectful of individual choices, dignity and independence
  • Comfortable working as part of a team
  • Committed to making a positive difference

Most importantly, we're looking for someone with the right attitude and values.

Experience in mental health, care, support work or a similar environment is desirable, but we'll provide the training and support you need to succeed.

Why Work for Northern Healthcare?
