Every day, you will help ensure customers across our network have the heating and hot water they rely on, delivering a service that puts customers first.

At Northern Gas Networks (NGN), our Gas Operatives are at the heart of what we do. You will enjoy a varied, hands-on role where no two days are the same, with full training, industry-recognised qualifications, and ongoing development opportunities to help you build a long-term career. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys working outdoors, solving problems, and making a real difference. You will work in all weather conditions and be part of a team that responds when customers need us most. Flexibility is important, as the role includes early mornings and evenings (with rotas provided in advance), along with a positive attitude, resilience, and a commitment to delivering excellent customer service.

A full UK manual driving licence is a requirement for this role.

In this role you will:

  • Carry out essential work on our gas network, including mains and service replacements, repairs to gas escapes, and other gas distribution activities that keep customers safe and supplied.
  • Work alongside the Team Leader to complete excavation, pipe laying, jointing, connections, and repairs, helping maintain a safe and reliable network.
  • Operate a range of plant and equipment, including mini excavators and pneumatic tools, following all training, safety, and maintenance requirements.
  • Champion high standards of health, safety, and environmental compliance, ensuring work is completed safely and responsibly.
  • Build positive relationships with colleagues, customers, and local communities through clear communication and a customer-focused approach.
  • Drive company vehicles and transport materials, equipment, and resources to support operational activities.
  • Represent NGN professionally at all times, helping to deliver an excellent customer experience and a positive impact in the communities we serve.

We are looking for:

  • A self-motivated individual who puts safety first and is committed to delivering excellent customer service.
  • Willingness to work a variety of shift patterns and take part in out-of-hours standby rotas.
  • Comfortable working in a hands-on outdoor role across a range of weather conditions.
  • A team player with a positive attitude, strong communication skills, and a willingness to learn.
  • Confident engaging with customers and understanding their needs to provide the best possible service.
  • Reliable, dependable, and committed to maintaining high standards in everything you do.

Why join NGN?

  • Salary from £34,744 per annum.
  • Operational Incentive Scheme.
  • 25 days of annual leave, plus recognised bank holidays and 2 additional half-days over the Christmas period.
  • Occupational sick pay available after the first 2 calendar days of statutory sick pay.
  • Generous stakeholder pension scheme, doubling your contribution, up to 10%.
  • Flexible benefits and salary sacrifice options, including discounts on UK attractions, gym memberships, restaurants, experience days, plus access to a virtual GP service.
  • Family-friendly policies, including up to 6 weeks of paternity leave and 6 months of full pay for maternity leave (for eligible employees), plus shared parental leave and more.
