Behind the gas network are the systems that keep everything flowing. When they're working properly, they run as they should. When they’re not, they need attention quickly. That’s where you come in. As an Electrical Engineering Apprentice, your job will be to help keep those systems working the way they should. This is a Level 3 apprenticeship designed to build your skills, so you can maintain and repair the network that supplies gas to homes and businesses.

Most of your learning will happen out in the field, alongside experienced engineers, where you’ll get stuck into work like:

  • Inspect equipment and keep systems running safely
  • Find faults and put them right
  • Install, repair, and maintain network assets
  • Work with tools and testing equipment used on the job

It’s work that counts. You’ll be part of keeping things running safely and responding when they don’t. Part of your apprenticeship will be spent at our York Training Centre, helping you understand the systems you’ll be working on in the field. In year two, you’ll begin working towards an HNC in Electrical Engineering. This will help build a deeper understanding of electrical systems, how they’re designed and why they behave the way they do. Over time, you’ll go from supporting jobs to understanding the work and carrying it out with more independence.

So, what does it take? You don’t need previous experience or all the answers from day one. What matters most is the attitude you bring. A willingness to learn and get involved goes a long way here.

You’ll probably enjoy this role if you:

  • Like practical work, rather than sitting behind a desk
  • Learn best by getting involved and doing the job
  • Are the kind of person who sticks with something until it’s sorted
  • Take safety seriously, and follow instructions properly
  • Enjoy being part of the team and working with different people

Here’s what we’ll need from you before you apply, make sure you can say yes to the following:

  • Wants to build a career in Gas Engineering
  • Be aged 18 or over by the start of the programme
  • Have GCSE Maths, English, and a Science at grades 4 to 9, or equivalent
  • Have a full UK manual driving licence
  • Live within 45 minutes of the advertised location
  • Finished all other apprenticeships by the time you start

The job itself relies on a few things, so you’ll need to be comfortable:

  • Wearing PPE and following safety procedures
  • Working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Doing practical, field-based work
  • Adhere to our clean-shaven policy where needed for safety equipment
