Ever wondered who helps people feel safe when gas issues arise? Well, it could be you. We’re looking for people who are ready to kickstart a career as a Customer Engineering Apprentice in our gas network. This is work that matters, protecting people, homes, and communities every day.
As a Level 3 Customer Engineering Apprentice at Northern Gas Networks, you’ll attend a range of callouts to assess what’s happening and take the right action. You’ll support customers when something's not right in their home, helping to resolve gas-related issues safely and effectively. You’ll learn by doing the job onsite, backed up by structured learning at our Training Centre. With support from experienced engineers, you’ll build the practical skills and judgement needed for the role. As your skills grow, you’ll take on a wider range of work like that carried out by our Service Beyond the Meter Team, including maintenance, repairs, and installations in customers’ homes.
A key part of the role is supporting vulnerable customers. This could be someone who is elderly, unwell, living alone, or unsure of what to do when a gas cooker goes wrong. You’ll take the time to listen, explain what’s happening and reassure customers, to make them feel safe and supported before you leave. In some situations, you’ll adapt your approach to give extra care, working alongside emergency services and other NGN teams to make sure the right support is in place.
Once qualified, you’ll be able to handle a wide range of essential gas works and emergency callouts across the network when it matters most.
So, what does it take? You need to be someone who can show the skills needed to step into serious situations and take responsibility for doing the job properly. You don’t need a background in gas or engineering. We’ll give you the training. What matters most is your attitude. You’ll be someone who:
- Stays calm and focused under pressure
- Takes procedures seriously and understands why they matter
- Can make sound decisions based on what’s in front of them
- Is comfortable with hands-on work and keen to learn
- Works well with others and communicates confidently
- Is dependable, on time and takes pride in doing the job properly
You’ll need to work within set processes and regulations, which means discipline and attention to detail are essential.
Here’s what we’ll need from you before you apply, make sure you can say yes to the following:
- Keen to build a career in Gas Engineering
- Aged 18 or over by the start of the programme
- GCSE Maths, English, and a Science at grades 4 to 9, or equivalent
- Have a full UK manual driving licence
- Live within 45 minutes of the advertised location
- Finished all other apprenticeships by the time you start
This is a hands-on role, so you’ll need to be comfortable:
- Wearing PPE and working safely within set procedures
- Working outdoors in all weather conditions
- Carrying out practical work
- Following our clean-shaven policies
Why join NGN?
- 25 days of annual leave, plus recognised bank holidays and 2 extra half-days over the Christmas period
- Generous stakeholder pension scheme, doubling your contribution, up to 10%
- Flexible benefits and salary sacrifice options, including discounts on UK attractions, gym memberships, restaurants, experience days, plus access to a Virtual GP service
- Family-friendly policies, including up to 6 weeks of paternity leave and 6 months of full pay for maternity leave (for eligible employees), plus shared parental leave and more.
