Deliver safe, compliant commissioning at the heart of NGN’s capital projects. As a Commissioning Engineer at Northern Gas Networks (NGN), you will be at the centre of delivering our capital projects safely and successfully. You will work from early project scoping through to final handover, acting as the technical expert to ensure our assets are commissioned efficiently and in full compliance with engineering and regulatory standards. You will lead commissioning across complex projects, using your technical expertise to add value from design through to delivery. Working closely with project teams, contractors and suppliers, you will ensure commissioning activities are planned, coordinated and executed to the highest safety and quality standards. This is a hands-on technical role where you will take ownership of commissioning plans, site coordination, compliance assurance and high-quality technical documentation. Engineers may be instrument-biased, electrical-biased or dual-skilled. We are looking for technically strong, detail-focused engineers with the experience and qualifications to thrive in a safety-critical environment. A full UK driving licence is essential. The role involves travel across NGN’s operational area, including major cities such as Newcastle, Sunderland, Leeds, York, Hull, and Bradford, as well as rural regions like North Yorkshire and Cumbria.

In this role you will:

  • Oversee and deliver the commissioning of multi-disciplinary projects across a range of scopes, sizes and values
  • Provide value engineering through technical input into Scopes of Work, concept and detailed designs, and technical queries
  • Contribute to process hazard analysis studies, including EHID, HAZID and HAZOP
  • Produce and review key project documentation, including HSE plans (RAMS, CPPs), quality/test plans, commissioning procedures, test results, as-built drawings and project databooks (RE9/RE18)
  • Develop commissioning plans to support efficient programme delivery and effective resource management
  • Carry out site commissioning activities, acting as Competent Person under Safe Control of Operations and EL6
  • Chair commissioning panels and coordinate on-site teams involved in the upgrade, maintenance and de-commissioning of gas assets
  • Perform site assurance duties and ensure stakeholders are kept informed of progress and key updates

We are looking for:

  • Recognised apprenticeship in Electrical or Instrumentation engineering, with NVQ or equivalent qualification
  • Strong understanding of Construction Phase Plans, CDM Regulations, safety requirements and environmental legislation
  • Knowledge of gas network assets and systems, including pressure/flow control, electrical distribution, metering, gas quality and telemetry
  • Understanding of gas distribution operations, including pressure management, operational constraints and asset management principles
  • Operational experience working with live assets in a regulated gas or utility environment, using Safe Control of Operations or similar systems of work
  • Ability to manage and coordinate multiple activities across a portfolio of projects
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively and remove blockers
  • Electrical or instrumentation bias, supported by project management skills including planning, resource and risk management, value engineering and data-driven decision-making

Desirable:

  • Relevant gas and electrical authorisations, including EUSR Gas Passport, COMPEX (EX01-04), SCO 1, 2 & 4 and EL6 (Restricted/AP/SAP/AE)
  • HNC-level qualification in an engineering discipline

Why join NGN?

  • Salary from £50,304 per annum
  • Annual bonus of up to 10%, recognising your contribution and performance
  • Car Allowance of £6500 per annum
  • 25 days of annual leave, plus recognised bank holidays and 2 additional half-days over the Christmas period
  • Occupational sick pay available after the first 2 calendar days of statutory sick pay
  • Generous stakeholder pension scheme, doubling your contribution, up to 10%
  • Flexible benefits and salary sacrifice options, including discounts on UK attractions, gym memberships, restaurants, experience days, plus access to a Virtual GP service
  • Family-friendly policies, including up to 6 weeks of paternity leave and 6 months of full pay for maternity leave (for eligible employees), plus shared parental leave and more
