Kick‑start your tax career with hands‑on experience and a fully funded qualification.
We have an exciting opportunity at Northern Gas Networks (NGN) for a Tax Apprentice, who will play an essential supporting role within the Tax function, contributing to the preparation, analysis and administration of tax compliance across the business. This position offers hands‑on experience in UK tax, providing the foundation to develop strong technical knowledge and professional skills.
Working under the guidance of senior team members, you will help ensure the business meets its tax obligations by assisting with accurate and timely tax returns, supporting tax accounting processes, maintaining documentation, and helping respond to internal and external queries. The role includes gathering and analysing financial data, preparing working papers, supporting the wider Finance team, and carrying out research into tax legislation and HMRC guidance.
This is a two-year fixed-term apprenticeship that provides fully funded Level 4 training in accounting or taxation through BPP, enabling participants to gain practical experience in both accountancy and tax. Apprenticeship transfers are welcomed, and applicants may begin their apprenticeship at an alternative level, subject to consideration. The successful applicant will play an integral role in supporting the Tax team, while collaborating with colleagues throughout the Finance department.
Upon successful completion of the initial apprenticeship, there is the opportunity to progress onto a supported 3‑year Level 7 Accountancy and Taxation Apprenticeship, ultimately working towards ACA/CTA qualification.
In this role you will:
- Assist with the preparation of UK corporation tax computations and supporting schedules
- Support with VAT return preparation and submissions, including reconciliations and resolving queries
- Assist with PAYE Settlement Agreements and analysis
- Maintain documentation to support compliance and audit requirements
- Work with external advisors and HMRC where required
- Support ongoing tax projects (e.g. transfer pricing, R&D, new legislation reviews)
- Provide administrative support for tax documentation, processes and internal controls
- Support wider finance team when required
We are looking for:
- A minimum of 3 A Levels at grades A - C/9 - 4 along with 5 GCSEs at grades A - C/9 - 4 including Maths and English (or equivalent)
- Completed, or working towards, a Level 3 AAT/ATT qualification (or an equivalent professional qualification)
- Strong attention to detail with well‑developed analytical skills
- Clear and confident communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information to non‑tax specialists
- Good working knowledge of Excel (desirable)
- Openness to embracing and using AI tools (including Microsoft Copilot) when applicable
- Proactive attitude with a strong desire to learn and grow within a tax‑focused role
- Highly organised, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
Please include a short cover letter as part of your application.
