As one of our Energy Consultants, you will run your own book end to end — prospecting, qualifying, pitching, negotiating, and closing. The pipeline is yours, the relationships are yours, and the commission is entirely yours! It's a more challenging path than working within a team structure, and it's not for everyone. But if you are self-sufficient, commercially aware, confident, and motivated by ownership, it's one of the most rewarding models on the Northern Gas and Power sales floor.
What you'll actually be doing:
- Prospecting and pipeline building: making 50 – 80+ outbound calls per day to identify and engage new business opportunities through cold-calling.
- Full sales cycle ownership: from first conversation to signed contract, including pricing discussions, supplier negotiations, and tender management.
- Account management and renewals: building long-term customer relationships that enhance your reputation and NGP’s.
- Commercial decision-making: advising customers on procurement strategy, contract timing, market conditions, and risk management.
- Working with the trading and procurement desk to structure competitive offers and navigate supplier dynamics.
Your role will involve outbound prospecting, customer relationship management, and deal progression. The balance shifts as your book matures. Early on your work will be heavily weighted to prospecting and winning new business. As you progress, your time will become more focused on renewals and account management.
What makes this rewarding:
- You control your own income. Every deal you close is fully yours, no commission-sharing!
- Your pipeline and reputation compound. You become the go-to person for your clients, potentially winning more business via referrals and renewals.
- You add to your value year on year, via increased commercial expertise in energy markets, supplier dynamics, and procurement strategy.
- You're supported, not micromanaged. You’ll be mentored by experienced managers and coaches with the full trading desk behind you.
- Progression is based on performance, not tenure; progression from consultant to closer and beyond is possible with hard work.
What's in it for you:
- Uncapped commission — fully attributed to you, no splits!
- Long-term career development opportunities which may evolve into senior commercial, leadership, or more specialist roles.
- 23 days holiday + additional December leave (December off) + bank holidays.
- Pension and access to Simplyhealth (money towards dental care, eyesight checks, physio, etc.).
- Exciting incentives for excellent performers.
- Daily cash incentives on the sales floor.
- A team environment where everyone celebrates wins.
Your first 90 days:
- Weeks 1-3: Intensive training on energy markets, procurement processes, CRM systems, and NGP's commercial approach.
- Weeks 4-8: You're prospecting with support. Your manager and coaches review your pipeline, sales strategy, and help you structure your first proposals to get those early wins.
- Weeks 9-12: You're operating independently with a growing pipeline. First commissions land.
This is for you, if:
- You have at least 1-3 years of B2B sales experience, ideally in the energy sector, having managed your own pipeline end-to-end.
- You have consistently hit or exceeded targets in a structured, KPI-driven sales environment.
- You are a self-starter who doesn't need someone else to structure your day.
- You are a confident communicator who enjoys speaking to MDs, FDs, and procurement teams.
- You are commercially curious. You understand how markets work, you have a hunger for knowledge and proactively uncover new opportunities that others would overlook.
This is not for you, if:
- You’re looking for a desk research or social marketing role.
- You’ve never done outbound sales before and aren’t sure you’d enjoy it.
- You’re uncomfortable with rejection; you’ll hear “no” more than “yes.”
- You want no performance pressure.
- You want to work remote; this is office based in Gateshead, 5 days a week.
