An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Occupational Therapist with a passion for spines to join our friendly and supportive spinal injuries team. Neurosurgery within the Manchester Centre for Clinical Neurosciences is one of the busiest neurosurgery departments in the United Kingdom, providing outstanding clinical care to patients across the range of neurosurgical sub-specialties.

Within Surgical Neurosciences, there are 8 dedicated neuro high dependency (level two) beds and 16 intensive care (level three) beds in a shared facility which can flex as to the number of neuroscience beds depending on demand. In addition to this, there are 65 non-elective general beds and 35 elective beds, of which there are 7 monitored (level 1.5) beds.

You will work with a highly skilled and motivated multidisciplinary team and within the Occupational Therapy department, you will be supported by the OT Operational / Professional Lead and peer support from the 11 band 7 OTs in the OT department. You are very welcome to visit us and ask any questions you may have.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Taking a lead role in the advanced assessment and treatment of Neurosurgical / Spinal patients, who may have complex and/or chronic presentations.
  • Determining clinical diagnosis and treatment indicated and maintaining records as an autonomous practitioner.
  • Being a source of expertise and undertaking a significant clinical caseload to a high professional standard, using specialist knowledge from theoretical and practical experience.
  • Planning, coordinating, and evaluating Occupational Therapy service in your work area provided to Neurosurgical / Spinal in-patients on a day-to-day basis.
  • Supporting and leading the Occupational Therapy in the delivery of evidence-based and client-centred care across the Neurosurgical wards.
  • Monitoring and improving standards of care by efficient use of resources, utilising clinical audit and research within neurosciences.
  • Leading teaching, training, and supervision of clinicians within the Occupational Therapy service.
  • Working as an autonomous practitioner being professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of your work, managing your own caseload and maintaining patient and own records.
  • Leading assessment, liaison, and decision-making processes on behalf of the multidisciplinary team for patients referred to the service and effectively liaising and communicating with the patient and external agencies.
