Assistant Professor in Economics (Teaching & Scholarship track) in London

Northeastern University London wishes to appoint an Assistant Professor in Economics (Teaching & Scholarship track). The appointee will teach predominantly undergraduate students and provide service to the discipline in line with the evolving needs and aspirations of the Faculty and University. Appointments will be made commensurate with experience and qualifications, reflecting a record of demonstrated teaching and service excellence.

Core duties will include the development and provision of innovative and inclusive teaching in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics at undergraduate level, and professional service appropriate to career stage. The role serves two distinct student populations: domestic degree students enrolled on Northeastern University London’s undergraduate programmes, and exchange students participating in one or more of Northeastern University’s study abroad programmes at different levels. The ability to deliver engaging, accessible, and intellectually rigorous instruction suited to a variety of cohorts is essential.

Preference may be given to candidates with active interests in the relationship of Economics to one or more of the following areas: sustainability, finance, technology, health economics, and ethics. We particularly encourage applications from those with an interest in innovative teaching, learning and assessment; those with experience of supporting a wide variety of students; and those belonging to groups underrepresented in UK higher education. We are open to appointing on a reduced fraction/job-share basis subject to our business needs.

The appointee will join a small and collegial Economics team with varied research interests, sitting within the broader Faculty of Social Sciences at Northeastern University London. The Faculty of Social Sciences comprises approximately 70 academic staff, including academics in Business and Project Management, Politics and International Relations, Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, and Design & Communication Studies. The University provides a positive environment for interdisciplinary collaborations and encourages work across disciplinary boundaries.

The Economics discipline plays an important role in both the domestic degree portfolio and the University’s participation in Northeastern University’s global network programmes. A particular feature of this role is the provision of Economics courses to London Scholars - undergraduate students from Northeastern University’s US campuses spending a year studying in London. These students bring a range of perspectives that make for a rich and diverse classroom environment.

Person Specification Criteria

To undertake this role, the following should apply – should you not have the experience below, please do highlight where transferrable skills would assist with you undertaking the role.

• PhD completed (or near completion) in Economics or a closely related discipline (essential)
• FHEA status, or equivalent, achieved or in progress (desirable)
• Demonstrates, through evidence, excellent ability to be adaptable, innovative, and inclusive in the role as advertised with regards to teaching and service
• Teaching competency in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics at undergraduate level (Levels 4-6)
• Experience of, or demonstrable ability to work effectively with, diverse student cohorts including international and study-abroad students
• Ability to develop excellent educational provision in Economics with a focus on student engagement and experiential learning
• Flexibility and capacity to teach across a range of Economics courses, where appropriate in collaboration with specialists from other disciplines
• Excellent written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills including presentation skills, both face-to-face and online
• Excellent IT skills and evidence of supporting the integration of technologies into learning and teaching
• Excellent time-management and organisational skills
• Willingness and capacity to undertake continuous professional development in relation to institutionally strategic themes, including but not limited to sustainability, finance, technology, health economics, and ethics
