Main duties of the job

This job description outlines the main duties of the post. The post holder will be required to undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as directed.

As part of University Hospitals Northamptonshire (UHN), encompassing Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust and Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, this role supports the expansion of tobacco dependency treatment services across both sites.

The post holder will:

  • Support patients, staff, and (where appropriate) carers to stop smoking or reduce harm from tobacco

  • Promote temporary abstinence during inpatient admissions

  • Contribute to maintaining smoke-free hospital sites and grounds

UHN recognises smoking as a chronic, relapsing medical condition (tobacco dependency) rather than a lifestyle choice. This role supports the delivery of evidence-based interventions aligned with the CORE20PLUS5 Previously known as NHS LTP.

The role will also contribute to reducing health inequalities, helping with temporally abstinences in hospital particularly among individuals with severe mental illness or learning disabilities or palliative care.

This post is funded by LLR&N ICB with governance support from the Northamptonshire Tobacco Control Alliance.
