University Hospitals of Northamptonshire Group Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Department seeks to appoint a suitably qualified and motivated SAS grade clinician with demonstrable experience in Oral Surgery and a defined interest in advanced prosthodontics. This post offers the opportunity to join a well-established, forward-looking service delivering comprehensive care within a supportive multidisciplinary environment.

Main duties of the job:

  • The successful applicant will work within a cohesive OMFS team comprising five Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeons, three Consultant Orthodontists and two experienced SAS grade Oral Surgeons at NGH.
  • The department is further supported by two Maxillofacial Registrar Trainees, eight Dental Core Trainees, and a visiting Consultant in Restorative Dentistry.
  • There is a clear strategic commitment to expanding the restorative and implant service for patients with complex rehabilitative needs.
  • The service benefits from an on-site Maxillofacial Laboratory staffed by two experienced Maxillofacial Technologists, providing a full range of laboratory services, including 3D printing and patient specific implants.
  • Comprehensive imaging facilities are available on site, including a modern CBCT scanner.
  • With the exception of cleft lip and palate and craniofacial surgery, the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is delivered locally.
  • A comprehensive Orthodontic service is provided at both sites, with close cross site collaboration to deliver an established orthognathic service in which Oral Surgery plays a central role.

Job responsibilities:

  • The post is offered at 0.78 whole time equivalent, with additional responsibilities within the Maxillofacial second tier on call rota, operating on a 1 in 6 basis and based at Northampton General Hospital.
  • As part of the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire Group, occasional cross site working may be required in line with service need.
  • The post holder will be expected to independently undertake minor and routine oral surgery procedures under local anaesthetic, with access to general anaesthetic theatre sessions where appropriate, and to manage regular outpatient clinics.
  • The role requires a high degree of clinical autonomy, supported by readily available senior supervision.
  • The department is committed to supporting professional development, including for clinicians new to this level of responsibility.
  • Fixed clinical sessions will be agreed within the job plan, although flexibility is required to meet service demands.
  • Opportunities for additional trauma exposure are available for candidates wishing to broaden their clinical experience through enhanced on call participation.
  • To participate fully in the provision of Minor Oral Surgery & Outpatient Clinics and Day Surgery including advanced prosthodontics.
  • To participate in the assessment, planning, delivering and management of removable prosthodontic appliances for post-operative head and neck cancer patients.
  • To provide highest possible levels of patient care.
  • To work as an active member of the Head and Neck team.
  • To actively remain clinically competent with annual appraisal.
  • To work closely with Multidisciplinary Teams.
  • To actively participate in clinical audit and clinical governance activities.
  • To teach staff and students (medical, dental & allied healthcare professionals).
  • To work to all Trust Policies and Protocols.
  • To work flexibly.

Education, Training and Qualifications:

  • BDS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • FDS / MFDS or equivalent.
  • Full registration with General Dental Council.
  • Completion of an advanced prosthodontic course.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Experience with managing Minor Oral Surgery lists independently.
  • Experience in managing Oral Surgery outpatient clinics independently.
  • Minimum 3 years SHO / DCT Grade in the Speciality.
  • Teaching Junior Staff.
  • Evidence of managing patients with advanced prosthodontic issues.

Skills:

  • Foundation competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards.
  • ST1/CT1 competencies in relevant specialty at time of application and likelihood of achieving ST2/CT2 competencies in a relevant specialty by the start date of the post.
  • Organisational skills.
  • Publications in recognised (speciality) journal.
  • A specialist interest in a specialist area to complement other colleagues in the department.
  • Research projects relating to speciality.
