We are delighted to offer four exciting opportunities for exceptional Consultant Anaesthetists to join our expanding department at Northampton General Hospital, part of the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN). You will join a large, supportive and forward-thinking department of 43 Consultants, working within modern theatre facilities and a new state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit. The post offers excellent opportunities for education, research, innovation and professional development through our partnership with the University of Leicester. Main duties of the job

  • As a Consultant Anaesthetist at UHN, you will deliver safe, high-quality perioperative care for elective and emergency patients across multiple surgical specialties.
  • Working closely with theatre, surgical and critical care teams, you will:

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant-delivered anaesthetic services across major and general surgical specialties, aligned to your appointed post.
  • Deliver perioperative care from pre-assessment through to postoperative review, ensuring excellence in safety, optimisation and recovery.
  • Participate in the 1:12 on-call rota, including out-of-hours emergency theatre and obstetric anaesthesia support.
  • Contribute to critical care support as appropriate, working alongside the dedicated Critical Care Consultant team.

Leadership, Governance & Service Development

  • Take an active role in shaping the future of the anaesthetic service through quality improvement, clinical governance, audit and innovation.
  • Support departmental leadership in theatre optimisation, human factors, perioperative pathway design and service transformation.
  • Engage in continuous improvement projects, simulation-based education, and the expansion of regional anaesthesia and advanced airway skills.

Education & Research

  • Teach undergraduate medical students, postgraduate trainees and multidisciplinary staff as part of UHN's commitment to excellence in education.

Person Specification

Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • FRCA or Equivalent
  • CCT in Anaesthesia or within 6 months of the interview
  • Membership of specialist societies
  • Further postgraduate qualifications in or allied to anaesthesia
Clinical Experience
  • Anaesthetic management of a wide range of head and neck, obstetric, general, orthopaedic, emergency, trauma, and major surgery with the completion of higher training module set out by the RCOA old curriculum or Level 3 of the current curriculum.
  • Advanced training module or Specialist Interest area module of the new curriculum in relevant area for job plan 1 Obstetric anaesthesia/Higher or advanced module or SIA equivalent for Job plan 2
Interpersonal Skills
  • Commitment to team working

  • Good written, verbal, and aural communication skills
