An opportunity has arisen for a skilled Assistant Payroll Manager to step into a pivotal leadership role within a collaborative HR services unit. As the second-in-command within payroll operations, you\’ll work side-by-side with the department head to ensure efficient, timely, and accurate processing across the employee base.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee monthly pay runs and ensure year-round obligations (like benefit statements and reporting) are met without issue.
  • Supervise two team members, helping shape a service-oriented, compliant payroll function.
  • Act as a key contact between the outsourced provider and internal stakeholders, ensuring queries and discrepancies are resolved promptly.
  • Support efforts to transition the payroll function in-house, with a focus on continuous improvement and risk mitigation.
  • Monitor performance of external partners against agreed benchmarks.
  • Keep operational guidelines and process documentation current and aligned with evolving service models.
  • Assist with strategy and service review by gathering feedback across departments and identifying enhancement opportunities.
  • Maintain a strong focus on data accuracy, legal compliance, and process efficiency.
  • Provide leadership in the absence of the Payroll Manager.

Requirements:

  • Extensive experience (7+ years or equivalent) managing or delivering payroll within sizable organisations.
  • Strong technical grasp of payroll legislation, including statutory entitlements, pensions, and manual calculation methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, guide, and develop people in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving capabilities and the ability to exercise sound judgement under pressure.
  • Clear communicator with a proactive mindset and a drive for high standards.
  • Comfortable working with HR/payroll systems and data platforms (knowledge of Google Suite advantageous).
  • Commercial awareness and attention to process efficiency.
  • Confident using or supporting system transitions and improvements.
  • Professional certification (e.g. CIPP or similar) is highly desirable.
