TITLE: School Police Officer/Attendance Officer

CATEGORY: Contracted Position

REPORTS TO: Chief of Police

JOB SUMMARY: To serve as a uniformed and armed officer to ensure a safe and secure school environment.

Qualifications

  • Assures compliance with Employment Eligibility through Criminal History Records, Pre-Employment Drug Testing and Physical Examination/TB Test Standard
  • Possesses prior law enforcement training and experience
  • Possesses prior supervisory and investigative training and experience
  • Possesses ability to maintain high level of confidentiality
  • Possesses the ability to give and to follow orders
  • Possesses knowledge of and ability to implement passive restraint techniques
  • Possesses the characteristics of dependability, punctuality, and flexibility
  • Possesses the ability to be courteous to students, staff, and the general public
  • Possesses the ability to complete appropriate training and certification as a school police officer
  • Possesses proficiency in providing and maintaining complete and accurate records
  • Possesses strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Possesses the ability to work a flexible schedule

Licenses And Other Requirements

  • Act 120 Certification
  • Successful completion of appropriate security training as required by School District
  • Valid first aid certificate, CPR, and AED card issued by an authorized agency
  • Possesses a valid driver’s license/pass MVR annually

Primary Job Functions

The position holder must be able to perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation. It is the responsibility of the employee to inform the District of any and all reasonable accommodations that will be required.

  • Maintains a presence in all district buildings to ensure a safe and secure environment
  • Enforces order in school buildings, on school buses, and on school grounds
  • Establishes and maintains an effective relationship with students, parents, staff, School Board, and community
  • Works collaboratively with building and district administration to ensure a safe environment
  • Issues citations and makes arrests when necessary
  • Participates in training programs necessary to maintain Act 120 certification and participates in other professional development activities as would benefit the security department
  • Provides drug, alcohol, and safety instruction to students as necessary
  • Controls traffic when school buses are transporting, loading and unloading students
  • Conducts morning traffic duty at the high school campus, as assigned
  • Assists with the maintenance and completion of daily logs and reports of all personnel and department activities
  • Makes telephone calls and/or visits students’ homes, at the request of administration, to verify residency and/or attendance/truancy issues; may arrest or apprehend any child who violates the Pennsylvania School Code regarding compulsory attendance; attends court hearings on behalf of school district
  • Assists in the implementation of the district emergency management plan
  • Assists with security coverage at district events and functions
  • Responds to requests from district buildings for police assistance
  • Communicates as needed with local police and municipalities regarding district security issues
  • Serves as liaison with state and local police and other appropriate agencies
  • Communicates all incidents involving other emergency response agencies to immediate supervisor in a timely manner
  • Fills voids in schedules when security staffing shortages occur

Secondary Job Functions

  • Develops sources of information to aid in deterring weapon/drug possession, gang intimidation, assaults or to aid in identifying offenders or potential threats against the school
  • Administers emergency first aid and CPR and utilizes defibrillators as necessary; arranges for emergency medical services as needed
  • Attends training and in-service as assigned
  • Performs related duties as assigned

  • Must be able to walk, and/or stand throughout course of workday
  • Must have ability to see near and far, have color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus
  • Must have ability to hear and speak to exchange information and be aware of immediate surroundings
  • Must be able to drive a motor vehicle

Hazards

  • Potential physical hazards involved in intervening in fights and other anti-social, illegal and violent behavior
  • Contact with dissatisfied or abusive individuals
