Special Constables come from all backgrounds and join for many different reasons. As fully warranted officers (excluding taser use), Specials hold the same powers, wear the same uniform and use the same equipment as their regular colleagues. They are a valued and vital part of North Yorkshire Police.

This isn’t an easy role—it requires resilience, strong communication skills, excellent teamwork, and a genuine drive to serve the public. You’ll need the ability to respond professionally to challenging situations, and the integrity to uphold our high standards.

In return, you’ll receive excellent training and support to develop your skills, confidence and leadership capabilities. Many Specials find that the experience transforms their personal and professional lives.

Please note: You’ll be expected to commit to at least 16 hours of volunteering per month. During training and probation, additional hours will be required. Ongoing training and development continue beyond initial onboarding.

Some types of employment may present a conflict of interest and prevent you from joining. Please refer to the employment guidance document before submitting your application.
