Location: Headquarters, Northallerton

Contract: Permanent. Contractually employed by North Yorkshire Police

Hours: Full Time

Salary: up to ÂŁ29,859 depending on experience

Our Support Service functions work in collaboration across North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, providing vital shared expertise to deliver efficient and effective service to our communities.

We are seeking an experienced Payroll & Pensions Officer to play a key role in delivering accurate and timely monthly employee payments and supporting the effective operation of our payroll and pensions functions. This is a vital position within the Force, ensuring our services remain compliant, efficient, and high‑quality.

Working within a knowledgeable and supportive team, you will collaborate with colleagues across departments, engage with external partners, and contribute to the continuous improvement of our processes. While support will be available, this role is well‑suited to someone who brings prior experience in payroll, pensions, or a similar transactional processing environment and is confident working with complex information.

Key Responsibilities
  • Take responsibility for processing monthly employee payments, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and adherence to deadlines
  • Maintain and update employee records, verifying information and managing changes in line with procedures
  • Undertake more complex calculations relating to pay, leave, deductions, and employee benefits
  • Produce, review, and interpret system reports to confirm accuracy and highlight discrepancies
  • Liaise proactively with internal departments and external suppliers to resolve queries efficiently
  • Support statutory obligations, including audit activities, data submissions, and year‑end tasks
  • Provide clear, informed guidance to colleagues through the People Services help desk
  • Contribute to the enhancement of processes and systems, identifying opportunities for efficiency and improved customer experience
  • Assist in maintaining strong internal controls, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and organisational policies
What We’re Looking For
  • Previous experience in payroll, pensions, finance, or a similar administrative environment
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to work confidently with numerical data
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain information clearly
  • A collaborative team player who is proactive and solution‑focused
  • High level of IT proficiency, particularly in Microsoft Office and data‑handling systems
  • Ability to work with accuracy, discretion, and attention to detail
  • GCSEs (Grades 4–9/A–C) in Maths and English, or equivalent
