The Opportunity
We are looking for an aspiring Junior Server and Storage Engineer to be an integral part of the infrastructure team, working within the defined server and storage strategy roadmap which is intrinsically linked to the organisational priorities of the OPFCC, NYP and NYFRS.
As a Junior Server and Storage Engineer, your core objectives will be to establish, implement and oversee an effective patch management regime. This objective is designed to ensure the continued functionality of the infrastructure, while also enabling each organisation to fulfil their obligations in line with required code of connections and adhere to the 10 Steps to Cyber Security patch management. To achieve these objectives, you will utilise a range of automation toolsets to streamline and enhance patch management processes.
In addition, you will have the opportunity to engage with subject matter experts (SMEs) within the Server and Storage and wider ICT team. Through this collaboration, you will develop the necessary skills to assist with troubleshooting and resolving issues related to server and storage infrastructure. You will also be involved in the planning and execution of changes aimed at improving server infrastructure and will participate in the implementation of new technologies introduced by the Server team.
Main Responsibilities
- Provision of specialist expertise to facilitate and execute the installation and maintenance of system software patches such as operating systems, data management products, office automation products and other utility software.
- Conduct vulnerability scans and assessments at the network, operating system, database, and application levels.
- Create and maintain reports for patch management compliance and system audit data.
- Perform administration tasks such as monitoring systems, checking scheduled jobs have completed successfully and working on assigned tickets in the support tool seeking guidance as appropriate.
- Troubleshoot systems and provide fault diagnostics, working within the team to resolve incidents and service requests.
What We’re Looking For
- At least 3 years’ experience in a second line / field engineer role.
- Experience of working with enterprise class server / client architecture in a medium to large environment, preferably in an emergency services organisation or high pressure environment.
- Thorough understanding of appropriate principles, standards and technologies.
- Proven problem solver with excellent analytical skills in a highly technical customer focused service environment.
- Ability to confidently articulate how you have resolved complex problems from your time as a second line / field engineer.
- Deep understanding of end-user thick and thin client solutions.
- Experience in resolving end user M365 solution issues such as Office, Exchange, Teams and OneDrive.
- Hands on experience with or a good understanding of the technologies that underpin an on-premises domain, such as ADDS (EntraID), DHCP, DNS, GPO, CA.
- Understanding of server and storage solutions, both physical and virtual.
Desirable experience
- Experience in or an awareness of patching methodologies for EUC and Servers.
- Hands on experience working with physical or virtual servers, in any cloud operational model.
- Any professional accreditation that lends itself to the role.
